Synopsis:
Former war hero Nikki’s peaceful life is shattered when her daughter is kidnapped. Thrust into the criminal underworld while hunted by cops and military, she must fight to rescue her child.
‘Protector’ tells the story of military veteran and war hero Nikki who is forced to return to a quiet life and take care of her daughter after missing so much of her life following the loss of her husband. But when Nikki’s daughter is taken by human traffickers threatening to take away the only thing she has left, she sets out on a deadly and determined mission to track down those responsible and rescue her daughter while making those who dared to take her pay dearly. As the police and military begin to catch wind of her bloody mission Nikki soon finds herself being hunted on multiple sides.
Directed by Adrian Grunberg (Rambo: Last Blood, Get the Gringo) from a screenplay written by Bong Seob Mun, Grunberg does a largely solid job at the helm of ‘Protector’ and makes it frequently look good although can’t overcome the story’s faults. The film’s cast includes Milla Jovovich (Monster Hunter), Isabel Myers (TV’s Mixed-ish), Manny Montana (TV’s Ironheart), Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield), Lydia Hull (Hot Seat), D.B. Sweeney (Megalopolis), Chase E. Kim, Don Harvey (TV’s We Own This City), Gabriel Sloyer (TV’s Blue Bloods), Texas Battle (Blowback), Arica Himmel (Motherland) and Matthew Modine (Oppenheimer), with most offering decent or at least mostly capable performances in each of their roles.
‘Protector’ is a decent action-thriller that serves up some enjoyable action sequences and a fair amount of brutality and repeatedly showcases the action star talents of Milla Jovovich who is clearly all game. While much of the action and the general premise show promise and various other stars contribute to the outing and do well enough, the film makes a few moves and choices along the way that while admirable don’t work nearly as well as intended and frequently hamper down what could have been a pretty stellar all-out action flick if it had gone the expected route.
Some films of this sort can suffer from a lack of plot or storyline for the viewer to care about, ‘Protector’ on the other hand actually suffers from not quite enough action as the hectic fights and showdowns is easily the most notable element of the film and tends to be when it really settles into itself. Instead of embracing that factor it tries far too hard to make things unexpected and twisty at times which quickly causes the tale to slip and become almost a bad cliché, while also causing the viewer to start to question everything prior, yet not in the way you might think. Fortunately it does throw in a handful of additional fights and brutal action-heavy moments to help return it to an at least enjoyable level.
Overall, ‘Protector’ is an entertaining and often exciting ride that shows some initial promise and repeatedly delivers some enjoyable action sequences that once again cement star Milla Jovovich as a believable action hero but the film loses its way by trying to be too clever and forgoing what works well in an attempt to be overly original and unexpected. It certainly has its strong points but the struggling and often illogical plot elements too frequently pull it down and take away from the explosive fun. If you’re a big fan of similar action and rescue films or of lead star Milla Jovovich then that might be enough to make this one worth giving a whirl and some are liable to enjoy it far more than I did, although I would encourage renting it or streaming it digitally as opposed to making a blind purchase if you haven’t yet seen it.
VIDEO:
The Blu-ray release of ‘Protector’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty good in most respects and while there are some moments of notable video noise and other minor imperfections, the majority of the time the presentation offers a clean, detailed and capable appearance that does the trick. Detail is capable on character specifics, backgrounds and the various action sequences throughout, while colors are decent when they stand out yet much of the film is quite dark and not overly colorful; fortunately black levels tend to hold pretty well throughout without any glaring troubles. Overall, this is a very decent although not entirely flawless high definition presentation that should mostly please viewers.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack contributes some nice immersion and aggression and delivers a clean and fairly hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It consistently takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, bullets, debris and other action related effects, along with vehicle activity and more throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never negatively impacting any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that offers some additional fun and excitement to the experience.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The Blu-ray release of ‘Protector’ does not include any extras.
