‘The Amazing World of Gumball’ follows the daily chaos and ridiculousness of the town of Elmore, primarily focusing on Gumball, an anthropomorphic cat and his adoptive brother and best friend Darwin, a goldfish; plus the rest of their family little sister Anais and mom and dad Nicole and Richard respectively. The animated series accompanies the key duo as they go about their daily lives alongside the other various odd and quirky residents of the town and encounter trouble and one questionable situation after another,  yet it always leads to over the top fun and a lot of laughs while the goofiness never ends.

The series was created by Ben Bocquelet who also serves as showrunner on ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’. The voice cast of the series includes Logan Grove, Jacob Hopkins, Nicolas Cantu, Kwesi Boakye, Terrell Ransom Jr., Dan Russell, Teresa Gallagher, Kerry Shale, Kyla Rae Kowalewski, Hugo Harold-Harrison, Sandra Dickinson, Mic Graves, Jessica McDonald and many more, with the two leads switching up the voice performers multiple times throughout its run.

‘The Amazing World of Gumball’ first debuted on Cartoon Network in 2011 and ran for six seasons before concluding its initial run in 2019. Two mini-series would follow with ‘Darwin’s Yearbook’ debuting in 2019 and ‘The Gumball Chronicles’ in 2021 although both are primarily compiled of clips from the original series, yet the latter does at least feature some brief newly created content interspersed throughout. The series is something quite special, especially in recent memory as it delivers a largely kid-friendly show that also repeatedly tackles real life subjects as well as injecting plenty of gags and jokes that adults will appreciate yet will often fly over the head of younger viewers.

It’s the perfect blend for an animated sitcom that’s as relevant and ridiculous as it is hilarious and even endearing at times; packed with unique and oddball characters that make nearly no sense at all yet somehow click and flow splendidly even so. Perhaps one of the other biggest notable elements is the manner in which it cleverly uses numerous animation formats such as traditional animation, CGI, Stop-Motion, and even Live-action just to name a few, and then throws it all together for an animated series that looks like nothing else you’re accustomed to. It’s a remarkably fun, smart and hilarious show that’s also a rare sitcom in this world that families can watch together without too much concern and if you have ever been at all intrigued but haven’t had the pleasure, then I would strongly encourage giving it a chance because it’s a real treat and you might be surprised at just how fun and funny it truly is.

Fans can rejoice as ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’ arrives home in its entirety at last in the 15-disc ‘The Amazing World of Gumball: The Complete Series’ DVD box set courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment which collects all 240 episodes from the beloved original series, in addition to both subsequent clip-show mini-series ‘Darwin’s Yearbook’ and ‘The Gumball Chronicles’. The DVD set features fairly impressive standard definition presentations of every episode in Widescreen and paired with surprisingly immersive 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtracks for each. While many fans will surely be mildly bummed by the absence of a Blu-ray release, they can rest assured that this one looks and sounds awfully decent for a DVD set and if you’ve wanted to own the series in its entirety it might just be worth making an exception and picking up this DVD collection. For anyone contemplating a purchase, this box set is definitively recommended!

VIDEO:

The DVD release of ‘The Amazing World of Gumball: The Complete Series’ features a 16×9 presentation utilizing the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on every episode of the animated series as well as both of the miniseries. The video presentations look pretty spectacular, especially for a DVD release and they offer clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentations throughout that are rich with vibrant color and never suffer from any sudden glitches or issues along the way. Detail is capable throughout with characters, backgrounds and everything else looking very good and if anything only better than expected. Overall, these are terrific standard definition presentations that look exceptional for the format and should easily excite any fans that don’t mind DVD in general.

AUDIO:

The DVD release includes a 384 kbps 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack on every episode of all six seasons and both miniseries. These multichannel soundtracks were also a pleasant surprise and they deliver clean, sharp and notably immersive audio presentations throughout each episode. They frequently utilize all five available channels more than one might imagine for a series of this sort and it repeatedly sends flying discs, racing cars and a whole lot more zipping throughout the various speakers whenever logical, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, these are great 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtracks that add some extra fun and immersion to the viewing experience and definitely shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD release of ‘The Amazing World of Gumball: The Complete Series’ does not include any bonus content, although it does feature both of the follow-up miniseries ‘Darwin’s Yearbook’ and ‘The Gumball Chronicles’ in their entirety.
