‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ invites viewers back to the troubled town where Pennywise the clown wreaks havoc, and takes us back to the year of 1962 where a group of children intent on uncovering the truth of what happened to a missing friend end up discovering something far worse than they could have ever fathomed. Meanwhile, a secret military project is forming nearby with plans to uncover a hidden object that could spell terror far and wide. Hiding behind all of the chaos, terror and uncertainty is a very specific, shape-shifting entity with a deadly purpose.

Created for television by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, and expanding upon the recent film adaptations of ‘IT’ as well as King’s novel which serves as the inspiration for it all, ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ does a spectacular job of beginning to uncover the horrifying past events revolving around IT. The cast of the first season includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Clara Stack, Matilda Lawler, Chris Chalk, Amanda Christine, Blake Cameron James, Arian S. Cartaya, Thomas Mitchell, Kimberly Guerrero, Joshua Odjick, along with Madeleine Stowe and Bill Skarsgård, with the majority each offering quite solid and capable performances in their roles that each contribute positively to the series.

‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ is a bold, brutal and often truly shocking ride into the history of IT and the horror that has plagued the town for far too long. It does a tremendous job of transporting us back to the ‘60s and offers a satisfying and fitting continuation of the story that aligns very well with the original story and just like the book and its film adaptations it never hesitates to delve into some truly bleak and disturbing places, while serving up more than a few shocking moments that will leave your jaw on the floor. In addition to crafting a tale that fits nicely within the overall scope of the original stroryline, the production values and cast are fantastic and Bill Skarsgård once again proves that he really is the perfect modern star to play Pennywise.

The series also utilizes some clever ideas and turns to make the timelines align, and even makes some bold moves like incorporating the character of Dick Hallorann from The Shining and Doctor Sleep into the tale which could have gone either way but actually works splendidly here as the character couldn’t fit more seamlessly into the tale and its concepts which only makes for yet another little treat that longtime King fans should appreciate. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of this series but enjoyed the novel and/or the recent films then this outstanding continuation is not to be missed and I can’t urge you strongly enough to go out of your way to give it a shot at your earliest convenience.

In addition to the impressive presentations of the episodes themselves, the set also includes numerous Behind the Scenes Featurettes that fans should appreciate and the option to purchase via a standard 4K release with a slipcover (which is the version that WB sent over for review) or in Limited Edition Steelbook packaging. While the choice of packaging will be up to each individual’s preference, the 4K UHD release itself should not disappoint and if you’re a fan considering a purchase this one is very highly recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘IT: Welcome to Derry – The Complete First Season’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, with the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the debut season’s episodes. The video presentations look spectacular across the board and they deliver clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentations on each episode that never suffer from any unexpected issues to be uncovered. Detail is terrific on everything from character specifics and the various specifics of Derry in the ‘60s and even the many notably darker moments which always look clean and sharp. The Dolby Vision HDR improves upon many elements such as the vibrant red of the floating balloons, bits of clothing and more, while black levels remain rewardingly deep, clean and rich. Overall, these are fantastic Ultra High Definition presentations that continually impress and fans should be absolutely thrilled with the results.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on all 8 Season One episodes. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. These multichannel soundtracks are outstanding in their own right and they each offer clean, crisp and wildly immersive audio presentations throughout that throw you directly into the tension, terror and fun. They repeatedly take full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, creatures, action and nature effects, crowd noise and a whole lot more consistently whipping throughout the various speakers at every fitting opportunity, while never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements becoming distorted or rendered problematic when occurring simultaneously. Overall, these are wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that deliver splendidly throughout and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.
