[Blu-Ray Review] Task: Season 1; Now Available From HBO – Warner Bros 2

‘Task’ follows an FBI agent still trying to regather himself after a family tragedy who to his frustration is assigned to lead a task force compiled of a ragtag group of individuals and investigate an ongoing pattern of trap house robberies committed by a struggling family man and his friends. When one of the robberies turns unexpectedly violent and deadly, things go further off the rails when the dangerous local Motorcycle Club that was hit refuses to accept the loss without a fight; sending two relatively similar men on different sides of the law on a path toward an inevitable confrontation.

‘Task’ was created for television by Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown) who crafts a memorable and moving series here with a tremendous cast to back up the stellar story. The cast of the series includes Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton who each contribute noticeably within and help this unforgettable ride to work as beautifully as it does.

[Blu-Ray Review] Task: Season 1; Now Available From HBO – Warner Bros 3

The debut season of ‘Task’ is television at its finest; a tense, powerful and engaging ride that’s as carefully crafted and heartfelt as it is tense and unpleasant at times. It throws you directly into both ends of the approaching conflict with fully fleshed out characters on both sides of the law that you become familiar with and quickly find yourself caring about and rooting for as things become increasingly chaotic and dangerous, and even the few truly despicable characters are so believably presented and performed that it’s nearly impossible not to have some opinions about them as well, especially as things progress. It all plays in part in making ‘Task’ such a marvelous and riveting series and one that any fan of great television won’t want to miss out on or overlook.

As many are likely already aware, ‘Task’ is a series that was never intended as ongoing and was even promoted as a limited series both prior to and during its run on HBO. Following impressive numbers and plenty of acclaim, series creator Brad Ingelsby and lead star Mark Ruffalo were eventually convinced to continue the series which has now been renewed for a second season. While it never felt like a series that needed a continuation and wrapped up quite nicely within its 7-episode run, at the same time it’s hard not to see opportunities for expansion and here’s hoping that the sophomore run will hold up with this incredible debut season. Either way I can certainly say that I’ll be there to give it a shot once again whenever it does return and the same can surely also be said for most other fans.
