Synopsis:

Four ordinary boys. A harmless prank gone awry. Their childhood innocence forever shattered, they vow to avenge its loss in the haunting drama Sleepers. Sentenced to spend time at a reform school for their reckless behavior, four basically good boys from a bad neighborhood suffer a horrible fate while there. Forced to perform unspeakable acts by the very adults entrusted to watch over them, the young quartet barely survives the ordeal. A decade and a half later, nothing can erase the painful memories. But neighborhood justice, with a little support from a loyal priest, helps even the score.

‘Sleepers’ follows what was intended as a harmless prank by four young boys that results in a tragic accidental death. As the boys are sentenced to serve time at a reform school for the crime, they are soon forced to endure unthinkable horrors that no child ever should, only to be released sometime later and forever changed as a result. But when a chance at vengeance shows up for two of them in adulthood it leads to a reconnection between the longtime friends and the potential to finally do something that could help set things right after so many years of hiding from the ordeal.

‘Sleepers’ is written for the screen and directed by notable filmmaker Barry Levinson who does a tremendous job guiding along the brutal and emotional tale which was based on the book of the same name by Lorenzo Carcaterra. The film’s marvelous and talented cast includes Kevin Bacon, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Bruno Kirby, Jason Patric, Brad Pitt, Brad Renfro and Minnie Driver, along with more and nearly all offer capable and notable performances throughout in their respective roles.

Initially released in 1996 and met with its share of controversy revolving around the real life events it was reportedly based on, the film’s impact was somewhat harmed as a result. Yet if you can ignore the questions regarding its reality, it’s hard not to be impacted by this remarkable and brutal film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Featuring a powerhouse cast of talented stars including Kevin Bacon, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman and Brad Pitt just to name a few, and is only further complemented by the careful guidance of director Barry Levinson, ‘Sleepers’ is an unforgettable and well-crafted look at the impact on four young boys who saw what was intended as a harmless prank turn their lives around in horrifying ways.

‘Sleepers’ is a unique film that’s as powerful and unsettling as it is difficult to forget and if you’re a fan of director Barry Levinson and/or the outstanding cast led by Robert De Niro and Kevin Bacon, or perhaps have merely been interested in the film itself for some time but never got around to checking it out, then it’s definitely worth taking the time to do so. It’s a pretty tremendous and memorable film that still holds up today and what better way to finally experience it as it becomes available in stunning 4K in celebration of its 30^th Anniversary.

‘Sleepers’ makes its way home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment in celebration of its thirtieth anniversary. The 4K UHD release features a full Ultra High Definition presentation of the feature with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 that looks outstanding as a whole and is nicely enhanced by a fully capable multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that’s offered in both the original theatrical presentation as well as a new Director’s Remixed option. In addition to the great video and audio presentations the release also includes a pair of brand new extras with Levinson that fans are likely to appreciate. If you’re a fan of this one that’s been hoping to see it receive a 4K upgrade then this 4K UHD debut from Warner shouldn’t disappoint and the release is definitely recommended for anyone considering a purchase.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Sleepers’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 presented in the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic as a whole and delivers a clean, sharp and vibrant presentation throughout that never suffers from any unexpected issues. Detail is solid across the board with everything from the interiors of the reform school to the courtroom and various exterior scenes along with just about everything else looking terrific, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers some upgrades on coloring amid city streets and on clothing and perfectly deep, sharp black levels nicely complement it all. Overall, this is a great Ultra High Definition presentation that delivers nicely throughout and should have fans very satisfied.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack available in 2 variations; the Original Theatrical soundtrack and a Director’s Remixed soundtrack which omits a couple lines of dialogue according to some reports. I opted for viewing this one with the Original Theatrical option and the multichannel soundtrack delivers nicely across the board, providing a clean, crisp and immersive presentation. It consistently takes advantage of all five available channels when appropriate in order to send some music, nature and action effects, crowd noise and more throughout the various speakers, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, this is a very solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that does its job well without any issues and should please fans and newcomers alike.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Sleepers’ features two brand new extras with director Barry Levinson that fans should appreciate. They are ‘The Making of Sleepers: A Conversation with Barry Levinson’ (running approximately 6 minutes in length) and ‘Sleepers: The Art of Casting with Barry Levinson’ (approximately 7 minutes).
