Synopsis:
Die My Love is a portrait of a woman engulfed by love and madness. Anchored by a tour-de-force performance from Jennifer Lawrence.
‘Die My Love’ tells the haunting tale of a woman named Grace who along with her partner Jackson move to a secluded cabin in the woods where she soon gives birth to their first child. Following the birth Grace falls into a troubled state and as she tries to avoid succumbing to the feelings plaguing her ends up in mental showdown where she must try and balance or escape the sense of dread and terror that is increasingly overtaking her.
Directed by Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here, We Need to Talk About Kevin) from a screenplay written by Enda Walsh (Small Things Like These) & Lynne Ramsay (Ratcatcher) and Alice Birch (The Wonder), and based on the book by Ariana Harwicz, Ramsay does a solid job at the helm of ‘Die My Love’ guiding the film along with a unique approach and fitting tone while remaining fully committed at every turn. The film’s cast includes Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings), Robert Pattinson (The Batman), Sissy Spacek (TV’s Homecoming), LaKeith Stanfield (Roofman) and Nick Nolte (Crime 101), with the majority offering capable performances for the most part, while Lawrence repeatedly carries the film with her intense portrayal of the lead Grace.
‘Die My Love’ is a fascinating and mind-warping journey that puts the viewer in the mindset of our lead Grace as she succumbs to a troubling case of postpartum depression that further consumes her as the days go on, while her partner Jackson becomes increasingly concerned with her mindset while at the same time unable to truly help. What helps the film stand out is also a big part of what will cause it to be nonsensical and confusing at times for many viewers and it’s safe to say that it will certainly land better with some folks than it will with others. The film starts out simply enough before detouring into an almost psychedelic sort of tone that aligns with the confused and altering emotions that Grace is forced to tackle with as her condition repeatedly hampers her down.
The unique approach fits within the scope of the tale and is commended in its own way for what I can only assume is a fairly accurate representation of her mindset (clearly I’m unable to provide any direct experience or information on the subject nor will I pretend to understand the condition as not only a man, but one without children) but it does lead to a jumbled and often confusing experience that also sees the timeline go out of the window shortly in which will make this one not work for many viewers who prefer a more streamlined and understandable film. While I did occasionally struggle to get through it at times for this exact reason which causes a frequently jumbled and quite confusing experience for those without direct knowledge of the situation, it’s also impossible not to applaud the unique and clever approach by director Lynne Ramsay who is obviously fully committed to the film. The truly remarkable and brutal performance by Jennifer Lawrence is something noteworthy all itself and she does an outstanding job of anchoring the tale while Robert Pattinson is also quite spectacular as the secondary lead.
Overall, ‘Die My Love’ is a well-constructed, mind-warping and fascinating exploration of postpartum depression with some tremendous performances that puts the viewer directly into the mindset of the lead Grace and takes us along on a disorienting and offbeat journey that’s a lot to take (or understand at times once things start jumping from one area to another) and it’s both impressive and infuriating as a result. ‘Die My Love’ is recommended for those that are fans of director Lynne Ramsay and the key cast (especially Lawrence) as well as those who enjoy an odd and often confusing arthouse film, while those that have actual experience with the subject matter will also likely be more appreciative than casual viewers. For those that aren’t already determined to give it a whirl and aren’t fans of similar offbeat films, you’ll probably be far better off just skipping it considering even someone like me who is a big fan of odd or nonsensical films had some trouble getting through this one at times.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Die My Love’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 1.37:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks great and perfectly represents the unique filming choices and the 35mm shot film embraces the format and keeps things largely clean, sharp and richly detailed while also retaining plenty of grain and other elements representative of the film source. Detail is capable throughout and everything from open landscapes to enclosed rooms in a house look as intended, while the HDR-10 offers a bit more fine-tuning on some colors including the expansive forest and other nature elements, although does at times result in a mildly darker presentation, especially during the darkly blue “nighttime” sequences. Overall, this is a solid Ultra High Definition presentation that looks good while staying true to the source material and fans and newcomers should all be quite pleased with the results.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack immerses you even further in our lead’s mindset and offers a clean, crisp and fairly active audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly utilizes all five available channels in order to send nature effects, aggressive dog barking and some other dialogue/effects throughout the various speakers when appropriate, while never allowing any other simultaneously occurring audio elements to become distorted or negatively affected along the way. Overall, this is a fully capable 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that further enhances the experience (both for good and bad at times) and shouldn’t disappoint.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Die My Love’ does not include any bonus material.
