‘Mercy’ tells the story of respected police detective Chris Raven in the near future who helped create a revolutionary new AI courtroom where a suspect is assumed guilty and provided ninety minutes with the full court’s technology at their disposal to prove their innocence prior to being executed only to end up in the seat himself when accused of murdering his wife. With ninety minutes to clear his name before all is lost, Chris must enlist the help of his partner and his talents to utilize every tool at his disposable to try and prove his innocence albeit all of the facts pointing to him. But as the clock runs down Chris only becomes immersed in a chaotic situation as his chances of escaping it alive drastically decrease.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Day Watch) from a screenplay written by Marco van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Bekmambetov does a nice job at the helm of ‘Mercy’ guiding along a tense and fairly believable futuristic tale but is unable to escape the plot holes and other issues with the story. The cast includes Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3), Rebecca Ferguson (Doctor Sleep), Kali Reis (TV’s True Detective: Night Country), Annabelle Wallis (Malignant), Chris Sullivan (Presence) and Kylie Rogers (Beau is Afraid), with most offering largely capable and fitting performances in each of their roles throughout.

‘Mercy’ is a fascinating, timely and at times notably intense mystery that takes place a few years in the future and accompanies a respected police detective who ends up before the AI judge he helped make a reality where he must prove his innocence when accused of murdering his wife. With most of the film occurring in real time it keeps the clock ticking without that last five minutes lasting an eternity as is often the case in films of that type and benefits from the unique guidance of director Timur Bekmambetov who has a talent for visual splendor and his work behind the camera is complemented by a solid cast led by Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson that help keep you locked in.

While ‘Mercy’ has a fair number of positives working in its favor, it struggles in a few key areas which can unfortunately be hard to disregard. While I’ll avoid any blatant spoilers here like usual there is one key piece to the overall puzzle that quite frankly makes no sense whatsoever and throws the logic of the entire film into question as a result, while also allowing a bit too much repetitiveness to take hold at times with the limited setting and the same dialogue often repeated a few too many times even for a situation that would justify it being mentioned more than once. Yet if you can ignore the illogical or baffling choices you’re liable to enjoy it quite a bit.

Overall, ‘Mercy’ is a tense, fast-paced and visually spectacular ride that’s a great deal of fun on the surface and if you can disregard the discrepancies and contradictions that get in the way you’ll probably have a blast, although some will have trouble getting past certain aspects. Fortunately tremendous visuals paired with the rewarding guidance of director Timur Bekmambetov and a solid cast led by Pratt and Ferguson help it to still hold up quite well in many respects and if you’re a fan of the director and cast or simply just intrigued by the story itself then ‘Mercy’ should be worth taking the time to give a shot, although I would encourage renting it or checking it out on streaming instead of making a blind purchase if you haven’t yet seen it because it likely won’t be one that everyone will be excited to repeatedly revisit.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Mercy’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.20:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular and offers a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any noticeable troubles or issues to be found along the way. The presentation shows notable improvement over the already very nice Blu-ray (released separately) with crisp, impressive detail on characters, surroundings and the various video feeds displayed throughout, while the Dolby Vision HDR improves many elements such as coloring on clothing, backgrounds and more which is paired with suitably deep and rich black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that delivers splendidly at every turn and should easily excite fans and newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack provides some nice immersion and enhances the tension throughout while serving up a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It consistently utilizes all seven available channels in order to send music, action and nature effects, plus quite a bit more repeatedly whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, and never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become negatively affected in the process. Overall, this is a terrific Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that sounds great throughout and never disappoints or underwhelms.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Mercy’ does not include any bonus content.
