[Blu-Ray Review] Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater; Now Available From The Horror Section – Alliance 2

‘Dream Eater’ follows couple Alex and Mallory as they arrive in the cold and snowy Lauretian mountains to stay at a secluded cabin in the hope of uncovering answers related to Alex’s increasingly violent case of parasomnia. Utilizing her talents as a documentary filmmaker, Mallory records everything on the trip which soon leads them to believe that what Alex is suffering from may be something far more sinister than a mere sleep disorder. Digging through the pieces and calling a professional or two for help, Alex only seems to get worse every day as things build to a breaking point that could be catastrophic.

Written, produced and directed by the Blind Luck Pictures trio of Jay Drakulic, Alex Lee Williams and Mallory Drumm who do a decent job in many respects at the helm of ‘Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater’ guiding along the tale with an increasing sense of unease at times and doing an impressive job of utilizing an extremely limited budget. The film’s cast includes Alex Lee Williams and Mallory Drumm also starring as the two leads, with small guest appearances by Robin Akimbo, Kelly Williams and Jay Drakulic with the onscreen performances seeing mixed results as some are notably better than others.

[Blu-Ray Review] Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater; Now Available From The Horror Section – Alliance 3

‘Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater’ is notable for a shockingly small budget and limited crew that’s far smaller than we are common to seeing these days, with the directors and writers also serving as the film’s stars and a secluded setting as well as using the found footage format to maximize the use of the budget. The end result is a mixed bag that ultimately disappoints more than it impresses, but that doesn’t mean the accomplishment of what they have done with what they had is to be ignored and it does have a handful of notable moments.

The film offers some hints at true terror and unsettling situations, with some cleverly shot sequences that find ways around the budget without detracting from the impact and delivery of the scene, although a few too many negatives do hamper it down as it progresses, namely the underwhelming and frankly disappointing conclusion that could have been and should have been so much more and a few moments where the performances aren’t quite solid enough to keep viewers from being distracted. It’s not an entirely horrid film and it has plenty of rewarding and impressive elements that stand out, yet its inability to follow through with anything memorable and the blatantly illogical choices of one key character make it far more infuriating and underwhelming than impressive by the time all is said and done.

[Blu-Ray Review] Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater; Now Available From The Horror Section – Alliance 4

Overall, ‘Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater’ serves up a low budget found footage horror film that does a terrific job balancing an incredibly limited budget and crew, with some great moments and hints at true terror and chaos yet it becomes lost in the repetitiveness throughout and the increasing calm sense of dread builds to more a disappointing whimper than the chaotic conclusion most will expect. If you’re a diehard fan of found footage horror or if you’re overly excited to check this one then it can’t hurt to give ‘Dream Eater’ a whirl but if you’re on the fence, hesitant or generally uninterested then you’re probably better off just skipping this one. For those who would love to give it a whirl I would strongly encourage renting it before purchasing the Blu-ray if you haven’t yet seen it.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Eli Roth Presents: Dream Eater’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty good for the most part and offers a relatively clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentation throughout that aside from some occasions of banding and other minor artifacts in some of the immensely dark sequences holds up well. Detail is generally good with character specifics and backgrounds both interior and exterior looking capable, while the limited and often intentionally muted colors in scenes never look underwhelming, and black levels hold up well in many moments although less so in a few instances of extreme darkness. Overall, this is a pretty nice high definition presentation that looks better than expected for the low budget film and fans should be quite pleased with the results.
