Synopsis:

Eleven seasons. Six children. But there’s only one Frank Gallagher, the proud, working-class patriarch of the independent Gallagher family, who without him would be…perhaps better off. When Frank’s not at the bar spending what little money they have, he’s passed out, leaving his kids to fend for themselves.

[Blu-Ray Review] Shameless: The Complete Series; Now Available From Warner Bros 2

‘Shameless’ invites you to spend some time with The Gallaghers, the dysfunctional south side Chicago family that repeatedly finds themselves in one troubling, desperate or unexpected situation after another that often leads to hilariously unpleasant consequences. From absent alcoholic father Frank, mother-like eldest daughter Fiona and incredibly clever yet troubled oldest son Lip to the rest of the younger children including Ian, Carl, Debbie and Liam, along with their tight knit neighbors and friends Kev and Veronica, the series follows the family’s lives over the course of eleven seasons and now all of the twisted and offensive hilarity arrives home in its entirety on Blu-ray in HD.

‘Shameless’ is based on the UK series of the same name created by Paul Abbott, and the US series was developed for American television by John Wells. The show’s talented cast includes William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Ethan Cutkosky, Shanola Hampton, Steve Howey, along with Noel Fisher and special guest star Joan Cusack for multiple seasons, in addition to countless guest and recurring stars throughout the course of the long-running series, with the majority offering quite capable and solid performances as a whole.

[Blu-Ray Review] Shameless: The Complete Series; Now Available From Warner Bros 3

‘Shameless’ serves up a wild and twistedly hilarious as well as occasionally touching exploration of a south side Chicago family which is ridiculous, outrageous and incredibly offensive (in the best way possible) featuring a truly talented cast to sufficiently back it up and keep the laughs and other elements of the series from ever feeling, tacky or forced in delivery.

The series focuses on an array of unique characters that are anything but your generic group of family and friends and actually allows each an opportunity to stand out, focusing on some characters more than others at times yet also doing an impressive job of allowing everyone plenty of chances to shine in the spotlight as they deal with everyday life in their difficult world; sending them down dark, bleak and even occasionally rewarding paths while always keeping the laughs coming without detracting from the unpleasant reality that many of the situations result in. Above it all it always showcases the love and support of the family whether it might be direct help or a more stern hand that’s needed when all begins to slip away. If you’ve never had the opportunity to check out ‘Shameless’ but tend to enjoy a thoroughly vulgar, offensive and pull no punches black comedy that is equally hilarious and uncompromising then I can’t urge you strongly enough to make a point of doing so.

shameless complete series blu-ray, shameless us

All 11 seasons of ‘Shameless’ return home, now in sparkling high definition for the 27-disc ‘Shameless: The Complete Series’ Blu-ray box set courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment which features all of the same content included on the DVD set released last year, merely with significantly better video and audio presentations throughout. The release offers full high definition video presentations for all 134 episodes of the  series that look pretty great as a whole (although the bitrates differ quite a bit for the first seven seasons compared to the final four due to at least one additional disc added to each season beginning with season eight). The nice HD video presentations are perfectly paired with great multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtracks for every episode that together have the entire series looking and sounding terrific.

The Complete Series Blu-ray set of ‘Shameless’ also offers all of the previously released extras from the physical releases of the seasons/series and comes home in two DVD sized Epik pak cases (similar to many other recent WB Blu-ray sets such as ‘Two and a Half Men’, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, and more) which themselves are packed inside a sturdy side-slip box that also includes an episode guide. The one key improvement of this set’s packaging compared to the DVD collection is that there are fortunately no double stacked discs.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Shameless: The Complete Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on every episode of all eleven seasons. The video presentations look great as a whole and offer clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentations on each episode of the series, with no notable issues or problems to be found along the way. Detail is solid on everything from character specifics and attire to backgrounds and interiors, while colors look good and black levels are sufficiently deep and clean. The final four seasons do have better bitrates on the episodes which are often noticeable due to the pattern of six episodes a disc shifting to 3-4 episodes beginning with the eighth season. Overall, these are very nice high definition presentations that all hold up capably and should excite fans who have been hoping to see the series arrive on Blu-ray in its entirety.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release includes a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on every episode of the series throughout all eleven seasons. These multichannel soundtracks do their job well without any troubles arising and offer clean, crisp and often fairly aggressive audio presentations for every episode. They utilize all five available channels in order to send music, nature effects, crowd noise and plenty more moving throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never causing any simultaneously occurring audio elements to negatively impact or contradict one another at any point. Overall, these are solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks all around that shouldn’t disappoint.
