Synopsis:
In WICKED: FOR GOOD, Elphaba and Glinda are now estranged, each living with the consequences of their choices. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), now demonized as The Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile, continuing her fight to expose The Wizard. Meanwhile, Glinda (Ariana Grande) has become a glamorous symbol of Goodness, basking in the perks of fame and popularity. When a girl from Kansas crashes into their lives, Elphaba and Glinda must reunite and truly see each other—if they are to change themselves, and all of Oz. Bring home the adventure with an exclusive sing-along and prepare to be changed…for good.
The untold story of Elphaba and Glinda comes to an end in ‘Wicked: For Good’ which rejoins the two in very different places. While Elphaba doubles down on her plans to shake up Oz and reveal the truth behind its wizard, Glinda has begun to embrace her role as the good witch and the popularity that accompanies it. But when a young girl from Kansas comes crashing into Oz it shakes everything up drastically and causes the once close friends to join together once more if they hope to find a solution to the chaos and save Oz from falling into a truly dark place.
Directed again by Jon M. Chu (Wicked, In The Heights) from a screenplay written by Winnie Holzman (Wicked) & Dana Fox (The Lost City), and of course based on the stage play with music and lyrics By: Stephen Schwartz, From the Novel by Gregory Maguire and the Book by Winnie Holzman, Chu does a great job back at the helm of ‘Wicked: For Good’ guiding along the conclusion with plenty of heart and visual splendor. The cast includes Ariana Grande (Don’t Look Up), Cynthia Erivo (Chaos Walking), Jonathan Bailey (Jurassic World: Rebirth), Ethan Slater (TV’s Gen V), Bowen Yang (The Wedding Banquet), Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Section 31) and Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic World: Dominion) who once more each offer largely solid and fitting performances in their respective roles.
‘Wicked: For Good’ is an enjoyable, touching and visually spectacular conclusion to the musical story showcasing the untold story of Elphaba and Glinda that features more memorable interactions, catchy musical numbers and an ending to the story that is in many ways rewarding. It does at times also tend to feel a little too convenient in the way certain things align with the story of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ we all know, with certain aspects working tremendously while a few come together in a way that can be hard to swallow or believe.
It’s a blast to see the various story elements from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ take form and connect and many of them are quite clever even if they don’t all land quite as well as intended, and for anyone like me that was largely unfamiliar with Wicked prior to these films but is very familiar with Oz it should have a good handful of moments that will slap a grin on your face in appreciation. At the same time it will make it somewhat difficult to look at the original film classic in quite the same way afterward. This second chapter once again keeps the visuals looking dazzling around nearly every turn, with some set pieces and action sequences that are sure to stun.
Overall, ‘Wicked: For Good’ is a visually dazzling, heartfelt and largely fantastic conclusion to the musical tale that sees all of the pieces finally come together and connect with ‘The Wizard of Oz’ with largely rewarding results. It doesn’t manage to work as flawlessly as the first half due to a slightly overloaded final act and at times overly convenient elements that connect a bit too effortlessly, yet it’s a long way from disappointing as a whole and fans who enjoyed the first film but haven’t yet had the pleasure of ‘For Good’ will definitely want to go out of your way to check out the conclusion. Director Jon M. Chu does a nice job once again at the helm for the second half and showing a clear appreciation of the story, and his work in the director’s chair is regularly enhanced by the great performances within and the dazzling visuals repeatedly on display throughout.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Wicked: For Good’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and offers a clean, sharp and marvelously detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any noticeable issues or faults whatsoever. Detail is tremendous on everything from the character specifics to the colorful world of Oz and the various interiors showcased throughout. The Dolby Vision HDR repeatedly improves upon many of the gorgeous colors within and delivers stunning greens, yellows and more that always stand out, while black levels remain sufficiently sharp, deep and problem free. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that impresses throughout and should have fans and newcomers thrilled.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack delivers splendidly in its own right and it provides a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout that constantly complements the musical tale. It consistently takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, action and flying effects, plus nature and crowd noise, along with a great deal more regularly zipping throughout the various speakers, while always ensuring that all dialogue and other audio elements remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a spectacular Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that holds up marvelously and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.
