Synopsis:

Washed-up stoner dad, Bob, (DiCaprio) exists in a state of paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa (Infiniti).  When his evil nemesis (Penn) resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences of his past.

‘One Battle After Another’ follows washed-up revolutionary turned stoner father Bob, who years after losing the woman he loves must live off-grid with his daughter Willa, existing in a state of paranoia that affects his everyday life. But when the military man that caused so much turmoil in his life manages to track him down and try to attack, it leads to a showdown between the trio that has the potential to change everything both for good or bad depending on the outcome, but Bob will have to try and reconnect to his old ways if he’s to stand a chance at survival.

Written and directed by notable filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread, Magnolia) who does a tremendous job at the helm of ‘One Battle After Another’ guiding along the powerful tale with heart, tension and humor. The film’s talented cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception), Sean Penn (The Gunman), Benicio Del Toro (The Phoenician Scheme), Regina Hall (Girls Trip), Teyana Taylor (The Book of Clarence) and Chase Infiniti (TV’s Presumed Innocent), with nearly all offering impressive and noteworthy performances in their respective roles that each help this fantastic film to work as well as it does.

‘One Battle After Another’ delivers an expertly crafted ride that’s filled with beauty, heart, tension and paranoia that will get under your skin and keep you locked in for an unforgettable 162 minutes that never gets dull or loses its way at any point. It never hesitates to delve into darker territory and explore the grit and humanity of the subject matter from different perspectives. At the same time it always retains a humorous edge with Anderson’s talent for witty dialogue still quite prominent, offering a few laughs amid the tension and chaos that manages to work splendidly without ever detracting from the story itself or its impact.

Talented filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson is definitely in top form with ‘One Battle After Another’ which is one of the director’s most thrilling and expansive outings yet, and Anderson’s capable work behind the camera is perfectly complemented by a powerhouse cast of stars led by Leonardo DiCaprio that altogether help this to become something incredibly special, memorable and timely. It’s one wild ride that looks outstanding at every turn while keeping things moving in a manner that keeps you from ever getting comfortable, often retaining a fittingly uneasy edge that simultaneously exudes hope and uncertainty, leaving the viewer uncertain of precisely what to expect next.

Overall, ‘One Battle After Another’ is an unforgettable and emotionally rich film that’s one of the best films of 2025 as well as one of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s most thrilling efforts of his career, with an immensely talented cast led by a spectacular performance from Leonardo DiCaprio to help seal the deal and make it something quite remarkable. It’s as funny as it is emotional and powerful and if you didn’t have the pleasure of catching it in theaters but are at all intrigued, then ‘One Battle After Another’ is very highly recommended. This one shouldn’t elicit any regrets from those spending the money on a rental and dedicating nearly three hours to it and if you’re merely interested in the technical merits of the 4K UHD release you should also have no complaints thanks to the stellar video and audio presentations it serves up.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘One Battle After Another’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks magnificent across the board and delivers a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any issues or faults to be uncovered along the way. Detail is spectacular on everything from character faces and attire to vehicles, surroundings and everything else, with the Dolby Vision HDR fine tuning various colors throughout and leaving pieces of clothing, vehicles and backgrounds standing out, while black levels remain sharp, deep and problem free. Overall, this is a phenomenal Ultra High Definition presentation that dazzles at every turn and should easily thrill fans and newcomers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is equally impressive and it offers a clean, crisp and frequently hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly utilizes all seven available channels in order to send music, vehicles, gunshots and debris, plus crowd noise and plenty more regularly whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, and never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements becoming negatively impacted or distorted in the process. Overall, this is a wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that perfectly complements the powerful film and its stellar video presentation throughout.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘One Battle After Another’ does not include any extras, although a Collectible Steelbook release with a disc of extras created by Paul Thomas Anderson is expected to arrive this Spring.
