Synopsis:

Talk about odd couples…The zippy, happy-go-lucky Lippy the Lion (voiced by Daws Butler) is always looking for action. Hardy Har Har (voiced by Mel Blanc) is a hangdog, hapless hyena who never laughs. So, naturally the pair are inseparable. Constantly on the lookout for the next big score, the always-optimistic Lippy leads a skeptical Hardy into a multitude of misadventures despite Hardy’s “worry-wartin.” Lippy’s all sunny side up, while Hardy’s trademark refrain of “oh dear, oh my” provides the comic counterpoint to all their extraordinary exploits, which travel from the Wild West and deserted isles to country clubs and racetracks. No matter the time or place, you can count on these two to maneuver into desperate danger each and every time! This collection contains all 52 of Hanna-Barbera’s laugh-filled exploits featuring Lippy and Hardy, all newly remastered from the best available film elements for this Blu-ray collection.

Get ready for hours of goofy fun and gags with one notably amusing odd couple in Hanna-Barbera’s ‘Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har’. The animated series features the voice talents of Daws Butler and Mel Blanc and follows the inseparable, odd pairing of Lippy, a no hesitation, go for it all Lion who is always quick to come up with a new scheme or plan for the duo to eat or get ahead in some form or another. Alongside Lippy at every turn is his dedicated friend Hardy Har Har, a laughing hyena who never laughs and spends the majority of his time worried about every negative thing that might occur, contradicting Lippy’s boisterous vibe and style.

‘Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har’ served as the third animated series in Hanna-Barbera’s syndicated block ‘The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series’ which aired between 1962-63 and included Lippy and Hardy along with Wally Gator (which was also released in its entirety on Blu-ray by Warner Archive the same day as this set; you can read my review of that release HERE) and ‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum’ (which itself was released on Blu-ray in October; you can also read my review of that release HERE) and the fact that all three of these animated shows have now been released on Blu-ray is pretty remarkable, especially with many of them not marking the most iconic offerings from the beloved animation company by any means.

Even as a big Hanna-Barbera fan all of my life I must admit I had never had the pleasure of ‘Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har’ prior to reviewing this Blu-ray release and even uncertain of exactly what to expect I ended up having a great deal of fun with the odd couple pairing and the amusing adventures they embark upon, typically in a quest to eat or find a better living environment. The series sees the pair venture all over the globe with their antics and no matter where they end up you can always count on the fun and laughs accompanying them. If like me you’re a Hanna-Barbera fan that’s never had the chance to check this one out, I would strongly encourage doing so because it’s definitely worth giving a chance and I certainly had an absolute blast tearing through this series on Blu-ray.

Lippy and Hardy arrive home with all 52 animated episodes/shorts on Blu-ray in the 2-disc ‘Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har: The Complete Series’ set from the fine folks at Warner Archive Collection who continue to bring us one tremendous classic cartoon series after another in spectacular HD. All 52 episodes of Lippy and Hardy are included in full High Definition and newly remastered from the best available film elements and it should come as no surprise that they look pretty marvelous for the most part (as per usual there is some quality fluctuation due to available sources so expect a bit of a shift on some episodes compared to others) and the HD video presentations are paired with fully capable dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks that are very nice as well in most respects. Similar to Touche and Wally, there are no extras included on the set, yet for the fans who would love to simply own every episode of the animated series on Blu-ray this one should not disappoint and is highly recommended.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har: The Complete Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation for all 52 original episodes/cartoons of the series which have been newly remastered from the best available film elements, with its original 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentations look incredibly good for the majority of episodes and feature richly detailed, colorful and filmic presentations that hold up splendidly throughout. It should come as no surprise for those collecting each of these releases that like many others there are some shifts in quality on various episodes due to the sources that were available for the restoration process which means that while the majority look fantastic, there are also a handful that look more noisy or less crisp in detail; something that is by no means the fault of the restoration process and unavoidable due to the quality of sources available. Overall, these are largely tremendous High Definition presentations that look stunning in color and detail and fans should be very pleased with the majority.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release includes a 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for all 52 episodes of the animated series. These dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks are quite nice in their own right and most deliver clean, crisp and well balanced audio presentations that capably juggle the various audio elements within to ensure that all dialogue, music, effects and the rest are fully audible and clean. There are of course a handful of soundtracks stemming from the less stellar sources that are slightly muffled or dull by comparison, yet never to a problematic degree that affects clarity. Overall, these are mostly great 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks that should leave fans very happy for the most part.
