“Touche, away!” So began the fifty-two episodes of this delightful series of animated adventures featuring the swashbuckling hero Touche Turtle, and his faithful sheepdog companion, Dum Dum. One of three different new cartoon series introduced by Hanna-Barbera for the 1962-63 television season, the first-ever complete collection of the cartoon antics starring TOUCHE TURTLE and DUM-DUM makes its home video disc debut with this newly-remastered and restored Blu-ray release. The Hanna-Barbera animated series ‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum’ arrives home in its entirety on Blu-ray. The series follows the delightful adventures of the ever heroic Touché Turtle who is called upon to help those in need when no one else will do the trick. Accompanied by his faithful sheepdog sidekick Dum Dum, the pair set out to tackle everything from common criminals wreaking havoc to getting involved with plenty of familiar fairy tale stories, but no matter the situation or threat, Touché Turtle and Dum Dum are up to the challenge, or at least brave enough to give it their all!

‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum’ was one of 3 new animated series created by Hanna-Barbera that debuted in the 1962-63 season and the series initially ran from September of 1962 through August of 1963 in first-run syndication and featured the voices of Bill Thompson, Alan Reed and Don Messick. It may not be the most well-known or even the greatest Hanna-Barbera cartoon to ever hit the airwaves, yet just like most of their animated shows it always manages to deliver a thoroughly enjoyable, humorous and kindhearted collection of adventures with some unique and lovable characters.

‘Touché Turtle And Dum Dum’ wisely never establishes or retains any set timeline or setting, disregarding any notable continuity in order to allow for countless opportunities story wise that sees our hero and his pal diving into adventures in countless times and scenarios from the old west to fantasy-laced classic fairy tales and even modern times (modern as in the 1960’s when the show was released of course), while typically utilizing some elements and traits that help to make it their own in the process, not to mention also featuring the beloved animation that always accompanied their animated series.

‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum’ comes home in its entirety and in stunning high definition on Blu-ray for the first time ever courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection. Their 2-disc ‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum: The Complete Series’ Blu-ray release features all 52 episodes (or cartoons as in this case “episode” refers to each animated short, not a full thirty minute episode as is often the case) newly remastered and restored and looking quite tremendous. The new HD video presentations are paired with solid DTS-HD MA dual mono soundtracks which together deliver the classic animated series looking and sounding better than it ever has before. Some fans may be mildly disappointed by the absence of any bonus material or classic additions from the original broadcast, yet for diehard fans of ‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum’ this marvelous Blu-ray release should still be quite the treat and finally provides the opportunity to own the entire series in one nice collection. If you’re a fan that’s already considering a purchase then this Blu-ray release is recommended and worth adding to your collection.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum: The Complete Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation for all 52 original episodes/cartoons of the series newly remastered and restored, with its original 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentations look pretty great for the most part, although due to the state of the source for various episodes the quality from one episode to the next does differ a fair amount, with some episodes looking significantly duller and almost washed out; although this is surely an issue relating to the quality of the source files and not the work put in by Warner Archive. For the most part the episodes look sharp, colorful and filmic, rich with a nice grain structure and some bright colors. Overall, these are solid although varying high definition presentations that mostly hold up well with all things considered and they’ll surely be worth the purchase for dedicated fans.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release includes a 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for all 52 episodes of the animated series. These dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks do their job capably and they deliver largely sharp and clean audio presentations for the episodes that do a nice job of balancing the various audio elements within and ensuring that any dialogue and music, effects or other audio elements never clash with or contradict one another throughout; yet once again due to the source materials the audio presentation on some episodes is noticeably tinny or muffled to a degree, with the quality shifting based on each episode per the available materials just like the video presentations. Overall, these are mostly nice and at the very least sufficient 2.0 DTS-HD MA mono soundtracks that do their job adequately and should satisfy fans who have been awaiting the arrival of this series in its entirety for some time.
