They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why. As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he’s got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out…
‘Caught Stealing’ accompanies Hank, a high-school baseball phenomenon who lost the ability to play after a terrible accident and now resides in New York City working as a bartender and trying to live a normal life. At least until his next door neighbor asks him to look after his cat while he takes an emergency trip to visit his ailing father. When various mobsters and criminals start showing up looking for something that Hank has no knowledge of whatsoever he ends up badly beaten. Now if Hank wants to survive he will have to get to the bottom of the whole ordeal and miraculously uncover a way to figure it out and save himself along with those he cares for, all while trying to keep track of his favorite baseball team as they make a last minute run for the division’s final playoff spot.
Directed by talented filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (The Whale, Requiem for a Dream) from a screenplay written by Charlie Huston (TV’s Powers) based on his own book of the same name, Aronofsky does a wonderful job at the helm of ‘Caught Stealing’ guiding along the chaotic and darkly comedic fun with a perfect pace and style. The film’s cast includes Austin Butler (The Bikeriders), Regina King (Shirley), Zöe Kravitz (The Batman), Matt Smith (TV’s House of the Dragon), Liev Schreiber (Asteroid City), Vincent D’Onofrio (TV’s Daredevil: Born Again), Benito Martínez Ocasio (Happy Gilmore 2), Griffin Dunne (TV’s This is Us) and Carol Kane (TV’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) in addition to Tonic (Pet Sematary 2019) as Bud the cat, with the majority each offering solid or at the very least capable performances in their respective roles.
‘Caught Stealing’ is a wildly exciting, fast-paced and occasionally quite brutal ride into unexpected chaos and danger as one ordinary man gets caught up in a world populated by dangerous individuals and revolving around a debt that he has no knowledge of. It retains a swift pace throughout with the tension gradually building as things become more hectic and dangerous and even manages to catch the viewer off guard on multiple occasions with some wild and occasionally mildly shocking twists and turns that help to propel the story into different directions. All the while it retains the brutal undertone and the tense fun and excitement at every turn, with a surprising amount of dark humor that will have you randomly bursting out with laughter during a handful of messed up moments.
The film is populated by numerous standout characters that each has their own unique charms and in many cases a good few appalling attributes as well. Butler repeatedly shines in the lead and does a terrific job in the role of Hank, although Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio tend to steal every scene they occupy as the dangerous and violence-prone Hebrew brothers who are just one of the deadly groups trying to track Hank down. The immaculately crafted world of New York City in 1998 is also truly impressive throughout and repeatedly stands out as a key part of the tale in its own right.
Overall, ‘Caught Stealing’ serves up a massively enjoyable misadventure that’s packed with violence, heart and dark humor, all occurring amid a fantastic looking New York City from the late ‘90s, guided along splendidly by notable filmmaker Darren Aronofsky whose tremendous work behind the camera is further boosted by a terrific cast led by Austin Butler. ‘Caught Stealing’ is very highly recommended for anyone that’s a fan of Aronofsky’s work (even if this is a very different type of outing for him) or the cast, along with just about anybody that typically enjoys a tense, twisty and immensely fun thriller that repeatedly goes in unexpected directions. If you’re already even mildly interested in ‘Caught Stealing’ it should easily prove worthy of your time and the cost of a rental to give a shot whenever you have the chance.
