Ti West’s ‘X Trilogy’ arrives home in a complete set with all three terrifying chapters collected together at last. ‘X’ follows a group of young filmmakers out to make a groundbreaking adult film until the reclusive couple they’re renting the location from start acting in increasingly odd ways leading to a night of chaos and bloodshed. ‘Pearl’ jumps back numerous decades and showcases the early days of Pearl’s life as she struggles to find a way out of her disappointing life and tries to find her big break. ‘MaXXXine’ picks up a handful of years after ‘X’ and rejoins Maxine as she begins to pave her path into the world of stardom in 1980’s Hollywood as a terrifying killer strikes throughout the town which threatens to reawaken her questionable past.

X

All three films in the ‘X Trilogy’ are directed by Ti West, with West also writing the first and final film while West and Mia Goth co-wrote ‘Pearl’ together and West does a fantastic job at the helm of all three films, guiding along the expanding tale with style and a specific unique look to each installment. Mia Goth stars in all three films, while ‘X’ also stars Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi. ‘Pearl’ co-stars David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro, while  ‘MaXXXine’ also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon, with the majority offering generally solid and fitting performances in their respective roles throughout the various entries in the trilogy.

Pearl

Ti West’s ‘X Trilogy’ is a wild, brutal and unique collection of films that each connect to a larger storyline while at the same time standing on their own in more ways than one. They each also offer their own very specific look that stands apart from the other installments; while ‘X’ features a very gritty, dirty filmic style, ‘Pearl’ on the other hand showcases a bright, vibrantly colorful tone reminiscent of classic Technicolor gems, and ‘MaXXXine’ has a look that’s almost sleazy; a grungy and dirty appearance that’s frequently drenched in neon throughout.

They each offer their own style of horror film as well, with each showcasing plenty of twisted fun, gory deaths and a general focus on a woman who believes she is destined to be a star and refuses to fall into the boring mediocrity of a normal life. Any genre fans, along with fans of filmmaker Ti West and star Mia Goth who haven’t had the pleasure of the ‘X Trilogy’ are highly encouraged to give it a shot. It’s one of the more clever and original horror trilogies in some time and one that deserves a lot of credit not only for the separate styles and vibes but the ability to make it all click and even get under your skin at times.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of the ‘X Trilogy’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation on all three films (X, Pearl, MaXXXine), with ‘X’ presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio, while ‘Pearl’ and ‘MaXXXine’ are presented in their original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratios. The video presentations each look very nice altogether and embrace the unique look of the individual films; utilizing a more gritty filmic look for ‘X’, with a vibrant and incredibly colorful look on ‘Pearl’ and a neon-heavy appearance on ‘MaXXXine’ and none of the presentations suffer from any unexpected issues to be located throughout. Detail is solid on each film with characters, backgrounds and everything else shining, with rewarding coloring and sufficiently deep, rich black levels. Overall, these are great high definition presentations for all three films that all look nice and retain their own style.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack for all three films. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. These multichannel soundtracks are a treat themselves and they each offer generally clean, crisp and aggressive audio presentations throughout that do a nice job of complementing the tale(s). They repeatedly utilize all seven available channels in order to send everything from music and action/horror effects to nature content and more throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while always making sure that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean, sharp and fully audible. Overall, these are terrific Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that hold up splendidly at just about every turn and should excite fans.
