The ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy returns home in a new collectible box set in celebration of the original film’s iconic 40th Anniversary! Rejoin Marty, Doc and the most impressive DeLorean ever seen as they travel to the past, future and back again while unintentionally causing a disruption in the space-time continuum that could affect everything. From the ‘80s to the ‘50s, back to the ‘80s, then to the 2015’s and so on, eventually landing them in the old west as they fight to save their lineage and livelihoods, this trilogy remains one of the most beloved film series of all time and now you can own it once again with exclusive all-new extras.
All 3 films in the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy are directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay by Zemeckis and Bob Gale for the first film and by Gale alone for the second and third entries and Zemeckis does a marvelous job at the helm of all three films guiding along the time-travelling gems with humor, heart and style at every turn. The cast of the films include Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson in all three, along with many more in each of the installments and they all play a big part in making this saga work as beautifully as it does.

The ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy is nothing short of iconic and phenomenal. The first film was initially released in 1985, with the second installment following in 1989 and the third a mere year after in 1990 and it still serves up a beautiful, moving and thrilling ride across time that hasn’t lost any of its charm or fun in the decades since it first hit theatre screens, still dazzling audiences today and also remaining one of the more rewarding and re-watchable sagas around on top of it.
Benefitting from the touching and exciting story along with some effects and sequences that still look pretty stellar considering and of course the direction of Robert Zemeckis and the marvelous performances by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, this fan-favorite franchise still delivers splendidly on nearly every front and even managed to do a shockingly accurate job of predicting a handful of elements from the future in the sequel. If you’ve somehow never had the pleasure of these films then I would strongly suggest going out of your way to rectify that as soon as possible because this is one marvelous trilogy that should definitely not be missed.

The entire beloved series returns home on 4K Ultra HD in the 8-disc ‘Back to the Future: 40th Anniversary Trilogy’ 4K Ultra HD release which features all three films on both 4K UHD and Blu-ray, along with 2 additional Blu-ray discs dedicated to bonus content, one of which features a collection of brand new extras exclusive to this release. In addition to the new collection of extras, the new set features all 3 films with spectacular full Ultra High Definition presentations complete with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, each of which is nicely paired with an immersive and altogether quite impressive Dolby Atmos soundtrack that combined have this trilogy looking and sounding better than ever before at home.
It is worth noting that the actual 4K and Blu-ray presentations included in this new 40th Anniversary set should be identical to the previous Remastered Ultimate Trilogy release issued on the 35th Anniversary (you can read my review of that Blu-ray release HERE) which will make the choice of whether to double dip dependent on both whether you already own the set in 4K and whether the disc of new extras justifies doing so. For those of you on the other hand that don’t already own the trilogy on 4K UHD but have been planning to upgrade at some point, then this release should be a perfect way of doing so and in that case I can’t recommend it highly enough!

VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Back to the Future: 40th Anniversary Trilogy’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation of all three films with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, and their original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratios. These UHD video presentations look wonderful as a whole and they each deliver a clean, sharp, richly detailed and naturally filmic presentation rich with organic grain and absent of any noticeable issues or troubles to be located throughout. Detail is terrific on characters, the various set pieces and time locations, along with everything else. The Dolby Vision HDR only improves many elements within by offering more natural and lifelike coloring on bits of clothing, scenery and more, paired with deep, rich and problem free black levels. Overall, these are tremendous Ultra High Definition presentations that have the iconic films looking truly spectacular.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack for all three films. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. These multichannel soundtracks are quite a blast themselves and they offer crisp, clean and fairly aggressive audio presentations throughout. They each take advantage of all seven available channels in order to send the iconic music, along with vehicle and action effects, crowd chatter, weather and plenty more whipping throughout the various speakers on every logical occasion, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements to become negatively impacted in the process. Overall, these are fantastic Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that hold up nicely throughout and add some extra immersion and excitement to the viewing experience.
