Synopsis:

The gripping, action-packed thriller based on the groundbreaking MTV animated series comes to 4K Ultra HD for its 20^th Anniversary in this limited edition SteelBook. Charlize Theron stars as the titular underground operative, fighting against totalitarian rule in 25th-century Earth’s last living city. She’s the best hope of overthrowing the oppressively sterile, “perfect” society. But while on assignment to gun down the government’s leader, she uncovers a web of startling secrets that could completely change the world. Co-starring Jonny Lee Miller, Sophie Okonedo and Frances McDormand, AEON FLUX was brought to the big screen by acclaimed director Karyn Kusama (JENNIFER’s BODY, YELLOWJACKETS).

Based on the beloved MTV animated series of the same name, ‘Aeon Flux’ follows a talented soldier in the fight against an oppressive controlling body in the last living city on Earth during the 25^th Century. The best person to stand a fighting chance against the powerful individuals in control, Aeon finds everything she thought she knew thrown into disarray when she is sent to gun down the head of the government and unveils a complex web of lies and deceit with the power to change everything. Wielding this new information she must join forces with the most unlikely of allies in an attempt to save the world.

The ‘Aeon Flux’ film was directed by Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) from a screenplay written by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi, based on the MTV animated series of the same name and Kusama does a suitable job at the helm guiding along the stylish and action-packed sci-fi fun capably enough. The film’s cast includes Charlize Theron, Marton Csokas, Jonny Lee Miller, Sophie Okonedo, Frances McDormand and Pete Postlethwaite along with more and most offer generally capable and fitting performances in each of their respective roles.

Based on the groundbreaking animated series on MTV, the live-action ‘Aeon Flux’ film debuted theatrically in late 2005 and brought the iconic characters and story to life like never before, albeit with mixed results. It’s not necessarily a good film but it delivers a fairly enjoyable, action-packed and often visually dazzling ride into a futuristic world and accompanies an unlikely hero who just might have the power to change everything. The film doesn’t necessarily show its age and the futuristic environments and explosive action sequences still hold up rather well, with a capable enough performance by Charlize Theron in the titular role, yet it never quite manages to excel beyond average and ends up offering a thoroughly entertaining and exciting ride that manages to retain the viewer’s attention but never quite reaches the level of unique and memorable that the animated series it was based on delivered.

The ‘Aeon Flux’ movie arrives home in 4K for the first time ever in celebration of its 20^th Anniversary courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment in a new Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release. The new 4K release offers a very nice new full Ultra High Definition presentation of the film with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 which may not be the most remarkable UHD upgrade we’ve ever seen, but at the same time provides a significantly improved and remarkable upgrade from the ancient MPEG encoded Blu-ray release of the film that first hit shelves nearly two decades ago. The great new video presentation is only tremendously boosted by a multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that like its video counterpart is a massive step up from the lossy Dolby Digital and DTS options included on the Blu-ray.

The older Blu-ray disc of the film is also included within and features all of the previously released extras, although unfortunately even the commentaries are only offered on the Blu-ray and not on the UHD disc. If you’re a fan of the 2005 live-action film that’s been hoping for some time to see an upgrade to the now incredibly dated Blu-ray release then this 4K Ultra HD Steelbook should certainly do the trick and is recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Aeon Flux’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10, presented in a 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very nice as a whole and marks a massive step up from the dated Blu-ray release to say the least. It delivers a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any notable issues or troubles to be uncovered along the way. Detail is rewarding on characters, settings and the fast-moving action sequences, while the Dolby Vision HDR improves upon various colors throughout such as grass, backgrounds and clothing. Black levels remain adequately deep and rich. Overall, this is a solid Ultra High Definition video presentation that looks pretty great altogether and improves upon the older Blu-ray in a huge way which should thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack is also a significant improvement from the lossy soundtracks on the Blu-ray and it delivers a clean, crisp and frequently hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes full advantage of all five available channels in order to send a whirlwind of activity zipping throughout the various speakers including everything from music and crowd chatter to bullets, explosions and debris, plus plenty more, all while making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements occurring along the way remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a very nice and aggressive 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up splendidly and contributes a good bit of additional fun to the viewing experience.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Aeon Flux’ features a number of previously released extras, the entirety of which can be found on the included previously released Blu-ray disc including the pair of Audio Commentaries which are unfortunately not featured on the UHD disc. Included on the release are ‘2 Audio Commentaries’, the first of which is an ‘Audio Commentary with Charlize Theron and Producer Gale Anne Hurd’ and the second is an ‘Audio Commentary with Screenwriters Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi’. The release also features a collection of Behind the Scenes Featurettes including ‘Creating a World: Aeon Flux’ (running approximately 21 minutes in length), ‘The Locations of Aeon Flux’ (running approximately 15 minutes), ‘The Stunts of Aeon Flux’ (approximately 9 minutes), ‘The Costume Design Workshop of Aeon Flux’ (13 minutes) and ‘The Craft of the Set Photographer on Aeon Flux’ (3 minutes). The film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (2 minutes) is also included.
