Synopsis:

Everyone’s favorite felons are back, and this time, they’ve got company. In this action-packed chapter from DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed comedy smash about a crackerjack crew of animal outlaws, the now-reformed Bad Guys are trying (very, very hard) to be good—but get hijacked into a globe-trotting heist led by a new crew they never saw coming: The Bad Girls.

Everyone’s favorite baddies are back for another wild ride in ‘The Bad Guys 2’ which sees the newly reformed team of criminals trying to find their place in a world that doesn’t involve pulling jobs and running from law enforcement, at least until their attempts to help uncover the real criminal behind a string of jobs ends up with them being framed. Things only get worse a new team of criminals is revealed dubbed The Bad Girls who blackmail the team into helping them pull off a massive heist. But finding a way to stop this new team before they go too far will be an even bigger challenge.

Directed once again by Pierre Perifel (The Bad Guys) and co-directed by JP Sans from a screenplay written by Yoni Brenner (Rio 2) & Etan Cohen (Men in Black 3), Perifel (and Sans) does a nice job at the helm of ‘The Bad Guys 2’ guiding along the animated sequel with plenty of humor, heart and excitement. The film’s voice cast includes many new and returning stars including Sam Rockwell (IF), Marc Maron (DC League of Super-Pets), Awkwafina (Kung Fu Panda 4), Craig Robinson (TV’s Big Mouth), Anthony Ramos (Trolls World Tour), Zazie Beets (Joker: Folie à Deux), Danielle Brooks (A Minecraft Movie), Natasha Lyonne (Smurfs 2025), Maria Bakalova (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Alex Borstein (TV’s Family Guy), Richard Ayoade (Soul), Lilly Singh (TV’s The Muppets Mayhem) and Colin Jost (Tom and Jerry 2021), with nearly all offering fitting and capable performances in each of their voice roles.

‘The Bad Guys 2’ serves up an incredibly fun, funny and action-packed sequel that also consistently benefits from the great animation on display throughout as well as the stellar voice cast featuring numerous new and returning stars. The sequel takes many of the first film’s best elements and then takes these amusing characters for a fairly different type of ride this time around that’s also familiar in many respects, simply allowing for a mildly different sequel that helps to keep the ongoing story fresh and unique compared to its predecessor, while also showcasing a surprising amount of growth for the team this time around.

The shift in perspective for the Bad Guys as they try their best to do good even as one bad situation after another seems to try and keep them down helps to allow a bit more depth to each of the characters while they each struggle with their own issues or questions as a result of the events occurring throughout. Naturally the double crosses, twists and bad luck throughout also repeatedly lead to more humorous mishaps along the way. Combine that with a steady serving of fun and action even beyond the first film and the end result is a wildly enjoyable sequel that never loses its way and honestly has me hoping to see plenty more installments in this franchise over the years to come.

Overall, ‘The Bad Guys 2’ is a hilarious, fast-paced and immensely entertaining animated adventure that’s filled with new twists, turns and characters to keep the group of lovable baddies on their toes, with nary a dull moment throughout. If you enjoyed the first film and are a fan of DreamWorks animated films in general, then ‘The Bad Guys 2’ is well worth giving a shot and is recommended. It’s another fun, funny and thrilling ride with the ragtag group of baddies trying to go straight that should have no trouble at all keeping you entertained and amused from start to finish and should be worth your time and the price of a rental at the very least. For those simply looking to purchase the film, the 4K Ultra HD release delivers tremendous video and audio paired with a nice helping of bonus material and should not disappoint in the slightest.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Bad Guys 2’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks magnificent across the board and delivers a sharp, clean and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any troubles. Detail is terrific down to nearly every animated line, with everything from characters to surroundings and the thrilling action sequences looking stellar. The Dolby Vision HDR improves upon many elements of this vibrantly colored presentation with character fur and clothing, along with plenty more benefitting, while black levels remain sufficiently deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that looks marvelous throughout and should easily excite fans as well as newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is an absolute blast and it offers a clean, crisp and incredibly immersive audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send action and vehicle effects, crowd chatter, music and a whole lot more repeatedly whipping throughout the various speakers at every fitting occasion, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a fantastic Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that fully immerses you within the animated fun and excitement.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Bad Guys 2’ includes a nice collection of bonus content for fans of all ages. Included on the release is an ‘Audio Commentary with Director Pierre Perifel, Co-Director JP Sans, Head of Character Animation Benjamin Willis, Head of Story Katherine de Vries, and Head of Cinematography, Layout Théophile Bondoux’, in addition to the Bad Guys Animated Short “Little Lies and Alibis” (running approximately 6 minutes in length) and a couple of ‘Deleted Scenes with Introductions by Director Pierre Perifel and Co-Director JP Sans’ (running approximately 6 minutes combined). Also included are various Featurettes and fun videos featuring the cast and crew including ‘Bad Guys: Out of Line’ (approximately 2 minutes), ‘Double Jeopardy: The Making of The Bad Guys 2’ (5 minutes), ‘Meet the Gang’ (7 minutes), ‘Double Trouble: The Animals Behind The Bad Guys 2’ (9 minutes), ‘Causing a Scene’ (5 minutes) and ‘Planning the Heist’ (10 minutes). Also featured is a look at ‘Sketching the Bad Girls’ (approximately 11 minutes combined).
