Synopsis:

They say you never forget your first. This couldn’t be more horrifyingly true for once-carefree teen girl Jay (Maika Monroe, Longlegs). After a night of intimacy with Hugh (Jake Weary, “Animal Kingdom”), passion turns to paranoia when Hugh informs Jay that she is now the latest carrier of a fatal curse passed on through sex. As Jay is haunted by nightmarish visions, her teenage friends dismiss her ravings — until they also see the ghastly ghouls. Now they must band together to break the chain and help Jay escape the horrors that always seem to be lurking just a few steps behind in this chilling, offbeat cult classic.

‘It Follows’ tells the haunting tale of teenager Jay who after going on a date with a guy she likes a great deal ends up tied to a chair and informed that he has passed a deadly uncertain force to her; an unknown entity that presents itself as different people and tracks you before ending your life, just don’t let it touch you! Having been informed that the curse can be passed along the same way as it was to her; Jay must decide whether she can take the suffering and unease as it increases in intensity or if she is willing to put this danger onto someone else.

‘It Follows’ is written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (Under the Silver Lake, The Myth of the American Sleepover) who does a tremendous job guiding along the eerie and unnerving tale with care. The film’s cast includes Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe, Bailey Spry, Jake Weary and Deborah Williams, with nearly all offering capable if not noteworthy performances in each of their respective roles that help it to work as flawlessly as it does.

‘It Follows’ was initially widely released theatrically in 2015 after making noise on the festival circuit and I can still recall just how enthralled I was when catching it in theaters on its opening weekend. It definitely hasn’t lost its touch in the ten years since either and still remains a truly remarkable and unforgettable piece of horror; a thoroughly unnerving, offbeat and marvelously crafted horror masterpiece that’s as terrifying as it is gorgeous in its detail and visual style. It takes viewers on a strange, uncertain and horrifying ride that will have you on edge throughout and right into the eerie and fittingly ominous conclusion.

Lionsgate Limited brings ‘It Follows’ home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time in the states with unique Steelbook packaging in celebration of its tenth anniversary. The release features the film itself with a gorgeous full Ultra High Definition video presentation from Second Sight Films that delivers beautifully and is perfectly paired with a rewarding Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that combined feature the film looking and sounding better than ever before at home, notably enhancing the subtle terror and uncertainty of the viewing experience for this outstanding horror gem.

The impressive video and audio presentations are accompanied by a solid collection of supplements featuring numerous interviews with the cast and crew, plus more; as well as the Steelbook packaging which features exclusive art by Phantom City Creative, featuring unique artwork on the front, rear and interior, with a transparent plastic slipcase to perfectly complete it all. If you’re a fan of this film and have been awaiting a domestic 4K release and are considering a purchase but haven’t yet picked up your copy, this Lionsgate Limited Steelbook should not disappoint and is highly recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbook release of ‘It Follows’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio, featuring the new 4K master from Second Sight Films. The video presentation looks pretty spectacular as a whole and it offers a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish which is absent of any noticeable issues or troubles to be uncovered along the way. Detail is terrific on everything from character specifics to interiors and the often eerie external settings and unpleasant imagery, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers more lifelike and full-bodied colors noticeable on homes, grass and other various tidbits throughout; with deep, rich and problem-free black levels to further complement it all. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that should easily thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is impressive in its own right and it provides a crisp, clean and frequently aggressive audio presentation throughout. It consistently takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send the film’s perfectly eerie score, along with creepy sound effects and plenty more moving throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or problematic along the way. Overall, this is a fantastic Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that holds up splendidly throughout and shouldn’t elicit any complaints.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Lionsgate Limited’s 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbook release of ‘It Follows’ offers a notable collection of bonus material including many recent extras that appear to be taken from the Second Sight 4K release. Included are 3 Audio Commentaries, the first of which is an ‘Audio Commentary with Author Joshua Grimm’, while the second is an ‘Audio Commentary with Film Critic Danny Leigh and Film Professor Mark Jancovich’ and the third being a ‘Critics’ Commentary Hosted by Scott Weinberg’. Also included are numerous Interviews with the cast and crew including ‘Chasing Ghosts: Interview with Actor Keir Gilchrist’ (running approximately 19 minutes in length), ‘Following: Interview with Actor Olivia Luccardi’ (running approximately 12 minutes), ‘It’s in the House: Interview with Producer David Kaplan’ (approximately 22 minutes), ‘Composing a Masterpiece: A New Interview with Composer Rich Vreeland aka Disasterpeace’ (13 minutes) and ‘A Girl’s World: Interview with Production Designer Michael Perry’ (24 minutes).
