The Last Of Us: Season 1 (4K UHD Review)

The second season of ‘The Last Of Us’ rejoins Ellie and Joel five years after the events of the first season as they have begun to settle into the community of Jackson while trying to move beyond the violent and heartbreaking journey they undertook and the questionable decisions made along the way. But when a new threat arises and everything in Ellie’s life changes once again, she soon sets out on a new dangerous mission but this time one of determined violence instead of hope and one that could have rippling effects throughout the community she’s come to call home.

Season 2 of ‘The Last of Us’ reunites viewers with the duo they came to love last time around as tensions remain high and uncertainty permeates the community around them. As a brutal battle ensues and a more human threat quietly attacks amidst the chaos it leads to a shift in Ellie’s world and a change in her perspective once things go terribly wrong outside the gates. The one downside of the new season is that it feels like it’s going out of its way to stretch things out and while season one felt like a well-rounded season of television the second season often feels more like part of a season drawn out in order to avoid reaching anything important in the storyline. It eventually concludes with a twist of sorts that as someone who is largely unfamiliar with the games I must admit has me mildly hesitant as to whether I’m up for what seemingly comes next, or again if you will.

The second season of ‘The Last of Us’ will certainly have some fans upset by a few radical choices and crucial events that occur (one in particular that’s borrowed directly from the games) but has plenty of stunning visuals, thrilling action and just like its predecessor also exudes a great deal of heart throughout. If you enjoyed the first season but haven’t yet had a chance to check out the latest run I would strongly encourage making a point of doing so whenever possible. It may not be quite as strong or memorable in most respects as the previous season but it’s still a definite must see for anyone that enjoyed the show’s debut run.

All 7 episodes from the sophomore season of ‘The Last of Us’ arrive home on 4K Ultra HD in the 3-disc ‘The Last of Us: The Complete Second Season’ collection courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. The release delivers every episode of the season in stunning full Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 that consistently impress, spread between three discs for optimal quality. The marvelous 4K presentations are perfectly complemented by wildly aggressive and immersive Dolby Atmos soundtracks for each episode that combined have the season looking and sounding nearly flawless.

The outstanding presentations of the episodes themselves are accompanied by hours of enjoyable extras that take you behind the scenes of bringing the new season to life. The release is available in a standard 4K UHD release and in a Limited Edition 4K UHD Steelbook which is the version that was sent over for review and the Steelbook features unique artwork on the interior and exterior and a rough to the touch Steelbook. Fans of the series who would love to physically own the second season on disc should have no complaints about this stellar release and for anyone that’s already considering a purchase it’s highly recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Last of Us: The Complete Second Season’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, with the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the sophomore season’s episodes. The video presentations look magnificent across the board and they each deliver sharp, clean and gorgeously detailed presentations from start to finish that never suffer from any unexpected flaws along the way. Detail is outstanding on everything from character specifics to the expansive landscapes and surroundings, much of which is improved upon thanks to the Dolby Vision HDR which offers more pinpoint and lifelike coloring on articles of clothing, the snowy and green surroundings and much more, all of which is further complemented by deep, rich and rewarding black levels. Overall, these are fantastic Ultra High Definition presentations that hold up beautifully throughout and should thrill fans as well as newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on all 7 Season Two episodes. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. These multichannel soundtracks are spectacular in their own right and they offer clean, crisp and wildly aggressive audio presentations for every episode. They repeatedly take full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send gunfire, explosions, crowd noise, plus whipping snowstorms and a great deal more zipping throughout the various speakers with regularity whenever appropriate, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, these are marvelous Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that fully immerse you in the series and never disappoint in the slightest.
