Based on the short story by Stephen King and brought to life in film by Mike Flanagan, ‘The Life of Chuck’ celebrates the extraordinary life of ordinary man Charles “Chuck” Krantz as told in reverse while it explores the end, the beginning and the beauty in between. Chronicling simple, yet crucial moments in the man’s life including the difficulty of loss and grief, as well as the unexpected discovery of beauty and love, not to mention the simpler moments of unexplained beauty and connection that stand out when you might least expect.

Written for the screen and directed by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, Hush) and based on the short story by Stephen King, Flanagan does a marvelous job at the helm of ‘The Life of Chuck’ guiding along the emotional tale with beauty, heart and wonder. The film’s tremendous cast includes Tom Hiddleston (TV’s Loki), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Eleanor the Great), Karen Gillan (Sleeping Dogs), Mia Sara (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Carl Lumbly (TV’s The Fall of the House of Usher), Benjamin Pajak (TV’s Camp Haedus), Matthew Lillard (Five Nights at Freddy’s), Jacob Tremblay (The Toxic Avenger 2023) and Mark Hamill (The Long Walk), with the majority offering capable if not noteworthy performances throughout in each of their respective roles.

‘The Life of Chuck’ is a thoroughly moving, beautiful and unforgettable exploration of a simple man’s life that is anything but ordinary. In many ways it’s a coming of age story and a celebration of life yet approached in a manner that’s anything but normal, with the tale unfolding in reverse as it starts with Act III and works into the conclusion (or beginning) of the tale in Act I which allows things to unfold in reverse in a way that will have the pieces fitting together as it progresses backwards so to speak. It’s a film that conveys hope, beauty and acceptance among the various unexpected elements of our world and does so with a clever style and fitting visual flair that brings the story together splendidly.

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan is clearly a fan of Stephen King’s work and has already proven himself to be a perfect choice to adapt his material, and while ‘The Life of Chuck’ is an incredibly different type of King tale, Flanagan proves that he is more than up for the challenge as he delivers a remarkably touching and moving film that will take your emotions for a rollercoaster ride and stay with you long after the credits roll, with the stellar cast including Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mark Hamill plus many more only helping to make this emotional journey work so spectacularly at every turn. There aren’t many films that manage to elicit as many emotions as consistently as ‘The Life of Chuck’ does and this is one unforgettable gem of a film that I would not suggest overlooking.

Overall, ‘The Life of Chuck’ is a powerful, touching and unique exploration of a normal man’s extraordinary life and a collection of key defining moments within it. It’s an unusual and genre-bending tale of love and beauty that celebrates the wonder of life and filmmaker Mike Flanagan does a magnificent job adapting Stephen King’s short story, with a spectacular cast led by Tom Hiddleston to help excel it to something truly special. ‘The Life of Chuck’ easily earns one of my highest possible recommendations and I can’t encourage everyone strongly enough to check out this marvelously touching and soul-warming piece of cinema. Whether you’re a dedicated fan of author Stephen King and/or filmmaker Mike Flanagan, as well as any or the entire talented cast within, ‘The Life of Chuck’ should offer something rewarding and memorable for all regardless. It’s a beautiful, heartwarming and emotional gem of a film that is not to be missed.

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Life of Chuck’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original varying Aspect Ratio of 2.39:1, 2.00:1 and 1.85:1 as the ratio shifts for each of the film’s three acts. The video presentation looks great and provides a nicely detailed presentation that’s clean, sharp and colorful, while absent of any notable issues or glitches to be uncovered throughout. Detail is solid on character specifics along with backgrounds and star-filled skies, plus much more which is all complemented by bright, rich coloring and deep, capable black levels. Overall, this is a pretty fantastic high definition presentation that holds up nicely every step of the way and shouldn’t disappoint any fans or first time viewers.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack nicely complements the onscreen beauty, wonder and emotion and offers a crisp, clean and occasionally quite immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, crowd chatter and plenty of other elements throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously becoming negatively impacted or distorted in the process. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that immerses you within the tale and delivers in every way required of it.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Life of Chuck’ offers a decent collection of extras including an ‘Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Mike Flanagan’, along with the Behind the Scenes Featurette ‘The Making of The Life of Chuck’ (running approximately 17 minutes in length) which includes input from the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more. Also included are ‘On-Set Interviews’ with ‘Tom Hiddleston’ (running approximately 14 minutes), ‘Chiwetel Ejiofor’ (approximately 10 minutes) and ‘Mark Hamill’ (9 minutes). A collection of ‘4 Trailers and Promos’ for the film (approximately 4 minutes altogether) are additionally included.
