‘Bride Hard’ joins Sam, a secret agent who ends up with most of her life occupied by the dangerous tasks she must tackle every day, but is intent to be there when her childhood best friend asks her to be the Maid of Honor at her wedding. When the job causes her to disappear during the pre-event celebrations she loses out on the title and must simply attend as a bridesmaid. But when a team of deadly mercenaries takes the entire wedding event hostage Sam will have to step up and do what she does best in an attempt to take down the numerous baddies and win back the wedding her friend deserves.

Directed by Simon West (Con Air, The Expendables 2) from a screenplay written by Shaina Steinberg (TV’s Chase) and a story by Cece Pleasants Adams & Steinberg, West does a decent yet still underwhelming job at the helm of ‘Bride Hard’ attempting to guide along the action and goofiness with heart and humor yet is repeatedly unable to save this one. The film’s noteworthy cast includes Rebel Wilson (Jojo Rabbit), Anna Camp (TV’s You), Anna Chlumsky (TV’s Veep), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), Gigi Zumbado (Heart Eyes), Sherry Cola (TV’s Nobody Wants This), Sam Huntington (The Last Stop in Yuma County), Michael O’Neill (Air), Colleen Camp (Amsterdam), Stephen Dorff (TV’s The Righteous Gemstones) and Justin Hartley (TV’s Tracker), with some offering better performances than others and a few too many seeming like they’d prefer to be just about anywhere else.

[Blu-Ray Review] Bride Hard; Now Available From Magenta Light Studios 3

‘Bride Hard’ is a fairly unimpressive, largely unfunny and entirely unoriginal outing that simply merges Die Hard and Bridesmaids into a sloppy hybrid of sorts and then sends out lead star Rebel Wilson to try and win everyone over with her fighting talents and hard attitude, almost none of which manages to work as intended and only causes the film to become even harder to sit through. It has a few minor elements in its favor such as at least moderately entertaining and humorous performances by a few of the supporting stars and a nice enough setting, but it struggles to make you care about any of the characters within and delivers some lackluster action sequences that while intended to be silly and fun rarely manage to even elicit a minor smile, instead more commonly only being met with one eye roll after another.

‘Bride Hard’ does have a few fun performances from its notable cast (primarily Chlumsky who stands out for going so over the top with her performance) and benefits from decent production and the guidance of director Simon West at the helm who has delivered a handful of rewarding action flicks over the years. Unfortunately even with these elements in its favor, ‘Bride Hard’ falls almost completely flat and rarely manages to offer anything of substance or even fun to the mix along the way and anyone on the fence about it would be better off just skipping this sloppy action comedy.

bride hard, blu ray

Overall, ‘Bride Hard’ is a pretty dull and disappointing film that aside from a few minor moments and brief laughs throughout its duration is far more of a chore to endure than a treat, with an unbelievable and unimpressive performance by Rebel Wilson who is unable to do much of anything noteworthy that might keep us engaged. Unless you’re a huge fan of Wilson or the other key cast members I would strongly encourage skipping ‘Bride Hard’ because it’s mostly a sloppy disappointment of a film that has little to offer aside from a few somewhat funny jokes and a few moderately enjoyable performances by some of the supporting cast. If you’re intent to give this one a chance I would strongly encourage renting before even considering a purchase to be safe, especially considering that the Blu-ray release itself is as disappointing as the movie due to the use of an incorrect aspect ratio and a misleading multichannel (but really not) soundtrack; more on that below.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Bride Hard’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation, yet oddly with a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio that fits the entire screen instead of the film’s original 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio (you can get a glimpse at the film’s intended ratio in the trailer at the bottom of this review). Aside from the issue with the Aspect Ratio everything else looks pretty solid and it delivers a clean, sharp and colorful presentation throughout that’s nicely detailed and absent of any notable issues to be found along the way. Overall, this is a decent high definition video presentation that looks fairly good in many respects but disappoints due to the inclusion of the wrong aspect ratio for the film.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features what is labeled as and reads on my receiver as a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack but in reality seems to merely be a stereo soundtrack packed into a 5.1 container leaving 3 of the channels unused. A lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack is also included. The multichannel soundtrack is of course extremely disappointing, especially considering it’s actually an incorrectly packed stereo soundtrack that only has any audio elements coming from the front right and left speakers and zero center or surround activity, which paired with the incorrect aspect ratio on the video sadly only seals the deal and makes this a surprisingly disappointing release all around. The soundtrack does decently enough in the two channels that it utilizes and all audio elements including dialogue, music and action effects are capably juggled and never result in any clashes or issues. Overall, while audible and clear this is still a disappointing 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack due to the fact that it’s really only a stereo soundtrack with three additional empty channels and this factor alone will surely irk both fans and newcomers.
