A new DC Universe begins in ‘Superman’ which joins the man of steel a few years into his role of Superman as he tries to balance his ideals as well as his two lives, that of mild mannered reporter Clark Kent and one of the most powerful superheroes the world has ever known. But when the diabolic evil genius Lex Luthor finds a way to potentially turn the world against the hero, he will need the help of his fellow reporter and girlfriend Lois Lane as well as a trio of metahumans calling themselves the Justice Gang and his super powered dog Krypto if they hope to clear his name and return the public’s trust in the hero.

Written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Super) who does a great job at the helm of the new ‘Superman’ film guiding along the heroic fun and excitement with heart and style. The film’s cast includes David Corenswet (Twisters), Rachel Brosnahan (The Amateur), Nicholas Hoult (Juror #2), Edi Gathegi (TV’s For All Mankind), Anthony Carrigan (Death of a Unicorn), Nathan Fillion (TV’s The Rookie), Isabela Merced (TV’s The Last of Us), Skyler Gisondo (TV’s The Righteous Gemstones), Sara Sampaio (At Midnight), María Gabriela de Faría (TV’s Animal Control), Wendell Pierce (Highest 2 Lowest), Alan Tudyk (TV’s Creature Commandos), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box), Neva Howell (Greedy People) and Frank Grillo (TV’s Peacemaker), with the majority offering capable and fitting performances altogether in each of their respective roles.

‘Superman’ delivers a fun, visually marvelous and heartfelt new take on the iconic DC comics hero that stays true to the roots of the character while also introducing a whole new world of heroes and villains in this debut film chapter (and second chapter overall following Gunn’s animated ‘Creature Commandos’ series) of DC Studios. It offers an enjoyable, explosive and beautifully crafted new take on the world and the characters, while also teasing many other characters and key elements that will be explored in the years and installments to come. It also never shies away from one of the most important aspects of the Superman character; his heart and compassion which are greatly embraced and showcased repeatedly throughout, helping this new film to evolve into something rewarding and engaging.

The one area that ‘Superman’ does mildly struggle is in attempting to interconnect and service so many characters and storylines while also throwing in plenty of nods and references to the bigger DC universe along the way which may not be any issue for those like me that are very familiar with the world and its characters as a whole, but is likely to cause a bit of an overwhelming experience at times for those that are more casual fans or not well-versed in the larger comic lore. Even so it shouldn’t cause most folks to become lost in it all and if you can just disregard some elements you’re likely to still have a blast with ‘Superman’.

Overall, ‘Superman’ offers a soaring, moving and action packed first movie in the new DC Universe that has as much visual splendor and dazzling effects as it does heart and beauty, with Gunn’s moving script and careful guidance helping to propel it along and a solid cast led by David Corenswet to complement it all. James Gunn’s new ‘Superman’ film is highly recommended for any fans of the filmmaker, the beloved hero and of the DC Comics world in general who should all find a great deal to love about this heartfelt and action-packed start to the new DC Studios universe. If you didn’t have the opportunity to catch it in theaters but are at all interested in this new take on the iconic superhero then it should easily be worth the time and cost of a rental for those that might not want to drop the money on a blind purchase.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Superman’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.90:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and serves up a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that’s rich with vibrant color and never suffers from any noticeable issues to be found along the way. Detail is wonderful across the board on everything from characters to interiors and plenty of stunning action sequences which all look delightful, while the Dolby Vision HDR helps to offer more lifelike and accurate colors on everything from the suits of characters to the surrounding landscapes, and black levels are deep, rich and rewarding as well. Overall, this is a tremendous Ultra High Definition presentation that delivers splendidly at every step and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack nicely complements the onscreen fun and excitement and provides a clean, crisp and notably aggressive audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send characters, action effects, crowd chatter, music and debris, plus a fair bit more repeatedly zooming throughout the various speakers quite regularly, while never allowing any simultaneously occurring dialogue or other audio elements to become distorted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that holds up tremendously throughout and should easily excite viewers.
