Synopsis:
A new era is born. A covert extraction team races to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility where dinosaurs too deadly for the original Jurassic Park were left behind. Their mission: collect DNA from three colossal creatures to unlock a drug with huge benefits for humanity. In a terrain populated by perils, they will make a shocking discovery that has been hidden for years.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ invites you to return to a world of wonder some years after the events of Dominion as dinosaurs have become less common in our world and only some still manage to thrive in select regions. Believing genetic material from certain species could hold the key to a medical breakthrough that has the potential to save countless lives, a ragtag team is enlisted to embark on a quest to one area where dinosaurs still reign and humans are no longer permitted in order to collect the samples and return. But when one thing after another goes awry and a random sea-travelling family is caught up in the chaos, the adventure quickly proves far more perilous than anticipated.
Directed by Gareth Edwards (The Creator, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) from a screenplay written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), Edwards does a commendable job at the helm of ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ guiding along the latest chapter with plenty of visual splendor and some style, along with some unique elements to the series. The film’s cast includes Scarlett Johansson (The Phoenician Scheme), Mahershala Ali (Leave the World Behind), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked), Rupert Friend (Companion), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (A Man Called Otto), Luna Blaise (TV’s Manifest), David Iacono (Fear Street: Prom Queen), Audrina Miranda (TV’s Criminal Minds) and Ed Skrein (Midway) with most offering solid or at the very least capable performances in each of their respective roles.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ delivers another enjoyable, tense and visually spectacular ride into the world where dinosaurs still exist and offers some new ideas and a somewhat unique approach in order to try to contribute some familiar yet original concepts into the long running franchise and the results occasionally work rather well at times while struggling at others. Interestingly, it pays homage not only to the previous entries in the series but also to some other gems by director Steven Spielberg, particularly ‘Jaws’ as nearly half of the film is basically a sea-faring adventure with a group of individuals on a boat trying to hunt down an amphibious species which naturally comes complete with tilting boats, characters in close situations and even some water attacks that could easily swap the dinosaur for a shark. There is a lot to appreciate about it all and it certainly makes for a highly intriguing way to approach a fair chunk of the film prior to the island arrival where things take a more land-focused approach.
The film does become slightly overwhelming and even a bit sloppy at times once they attempt to throw another four characters into the mix which results in some jumbled moments and an occasional need to suspend belief (yes, even for these films) when a few too many characters seem to conveniently escape potential harm or death time and again. Fortunately, there is also plenty going for it in the positive department including the outstanding visual effects and creatures that we’ve come to love about the series, in addition to some quite decent casting that results in notable chemistry from many of the stars, even if a few too many characters only seem to exist for the purpose of their deaths, but that’s not exactly unheard of in the franchise by any means and I can’t deny that it keeps things a bit more consistently exciting as well.
Overall, ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ offers an entertaining and often thrilling new adventure in the saga that’s rife with marvelous visuals and a new group of characters to accompany the next chapter and the result is a largely solid outing yet one that does struggle at times to balance the story and visual splendor. ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ isn’t the greatest installment in the series or even one of them, yet it is commended for the manner in which it tries to offer something relatively fresh and new to the mix while also staying true to other elements that fans want to see and for any fans of the franchise who haven’t yet had the opportunity to check it out, it’s definitely recommended as it does have plenty going for it, especially the stunning visuals and dinosaurs that never fail to amaze in their appearance and believability. At the absolute least it should be worth taking the time to rent and give it a shot whenever convenient.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks great and delivers a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish which is absent of any noticeable issues to be located along the way. Detail is tremendous on everything from human characters to the impressively intricate dinosaurs, along with the gorgeous surroundings on display throughout. The Dolby Vision HDR offers richer and more lifelike coloring on water, clothing and surroundings, plus more, paired with deep, rich and rewarding black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that shouldn’t have any issue pleasing fans and first time viewers alike.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is quite a treat and it provides a crisp, clean and hard hitting soundtrack throughout. It constantly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send water crashing, action and dinosaur effects, plus vehicles, nature effects and plenty more repeatedly whipping throughout the various speakers, while the massive dinosaurs also frequently offer plenty of opportunities to let your subwoofer show off its stuff; all while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that may occur simultaneously to become distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, this is a magnificent Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that impresses at nearly every turn.
