Super sleuths Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo are on the case for ghosts, real ghosts this time, 13 of the world’s meanest ghosts to be exact. Once banned to an enchanted Chest of Demons of eternity, all 13 spirits are now loose to wreak havoc on the world and only Scooby-Doo can recapture them because — ruh-roh! — he’s the one who unwittingly opened the chest and let them out! Joined by the pint-sized, fast –talking magician/con artist Flim-Flam and guided by the world’s greatest mystic Vincent van Ghoul (voiced and inspired by the incomparable Vincent Price), the gang causes mayhem hunting ghosts around the world while cracking fans up in the comfort of their home. Scare up this spooktacular 2-disc complete series collection for a haunting good time!

Scooby, Shaggy and Daphne are on the hunt once again, but this time the ghosts are actually real in ‘The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo!’. The series joins the trio along with Scrappy and newfound friends Flim-Flam and Vincent van Ghoul as the mystery team must trek the globe and track down thirteen of the worst spirits around after Scooby and Shaggy accidentally release the captive ghosts from an ancient chest. Now they must face their fears in order to locate and recapture them all before things get worse, all while the pair of troublesome ghosts that tricked them into opening the chest try to thwart them at every turn.

‘The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo!’ made its television debut in 1985 and aired all thirteen episodes of its run between September and December of that year. The series is an undeniably fun ride that brings some real threats as well as a few new friends for the mystery solving teens, along with a nicely crafted ongoing story that follows their quest to track down thirteen dangerous ghosts after Scooby and Shaggy are tricked by a pair of goofy spirits into releasing them from the chest they were trapped in years ago.

Due to the series not fully concluding its storyline, the plot was revisited in the 2019 animated movie ‘Scooby-Doo and the Curse of the 13^th Ghost’ although many fans were largely disappointed by the direction it was taken, although I definitely enjoyed it quite a bit for what it was. If you’re a Scooby fan that’s never had the pleasure of ‘The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo’ then I would strongly encourage checking it out as it may not be the best Scooby series ever but is arguably one of the best from the ‘80s and is not only clever and silly, but immensely enjoyable; still holding up rather well in most respects decades later.

All 13 episodes of the beloved 1980’s animated series return home in the 2-disc MOD ‘The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo!: The Complete Series’ DVD release which ships in a DVD case with the 2 burned DVD+R discs in overlapping slots within and basic black labels for the discs themselves as opposed to the previous art featured on the initial release. Other than the production method for this re-release, the content should be identical to the previous DVD edition of the series and includes largely decent standard definition video presentations and mono Dolby Digital soundtracks on each episode, with the series spread between the two discs. The release also features an episode of the series ‘Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue’ as a bonus on disc one. If you missed out on the previous release and don’t mind the burned MOD discs, then this one is recommended and worth picking up at the right price for any Scooby fans already considering a purchase.

VIDEO:

The DVD release of ‘The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo!: The Complete Series’ features a 4×3 presentation utilizing the show’s original 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio on every episode of the series, produced on demand using DVD+R discs. The video presentations look decent enough and provide generally sharp, colorful and capably detailed presentations from start to finish on each episode. Detail is solid throughout with characters and surroundings looking mostly clean and nice, although there is a fair amount of pops, scratches and other imperfections noticeable from the source material along the way. Overall, these are mostly solid standard definition presentations that aren’t outstanding but are far from terrible as well and for those who don’t mind the DVD format they should certainly do the trick.

AUDIO:

The DVD release includes a 192 kbps 1.0 mono Dolby Digital soundtrack on every episode of each series. These mono soundtracks deliver quite nicely as a whole and offer clean, sharp and well balanced audio presentations on all thirteen episodes of the animated series. They do a nice job of juggling the various audio elements within, with all dialogue, music and effects sounding clean and sharp; never allowing any simultaneously occurring dialogue or other audio elements to become negatively affected or distorted along the way. Overall, these are solid Dolby Digital mono soundtracks that hold up pretty well and shouldn’t disappoint fans.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD release of ‘The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo!: The Complete Series’ includes one bonus cartoon from the series ‘Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue’; “Don’t Feed the Animals” (running approximately 23 minutes in length).
