Synopsis:
During a transoceanic journey, Montego Air Flight 828 disappears, presumed lost at sea. Five years later, the plane lands safely — but for those on board, only five hours have passed. Both a high-concept mystery and a relationship drama about interrupted lives, Manifest centers on the supernaturally fractured bonds between the survivors and their loved ones who’ve spent years moving on without them. As the government investigates what really happened on their flight, the survivors begin to ask themselves why it happened and what it means. While the mystery of Flight 828 unfolds and these broken souls try to repair themselves and the world around them, the series follows their intersecting lives and connections as they search for an ultimate purpose that may be their destiny.
‘Manifest’ tells the thrilling story of the passengers of transoceanic Montego Air flight 828 who after some unexpected midair turbulence soon thereafter arrive safely at their destination only to discover that the plane has been missing for over five years, yet for the passengers onboard no time has passed, nor have they aged a day. As they try to settle back into their lives while dealing with scrutiny, uncertainty and a drastically different world than they left, everything takes an odd turn when they start to experience unexplained visions and voices that lead them to others in need of help. Referring to these occurrences as “callings” they must navigate a world that continues to be uncertain of them and where they were for five mysterious years, all while trying to determine the purpose of these callings and odd events that might just be their ticket to avoiding an uncertain fate.
‘Manifest’ was created for television by Jeff Rake. The cast of the series includes Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, J.R. Ramirez, Parveen Kaur, Luna Blaise, Athena Karkanis, Matt Long, Daryl Edwards, Jack Messina, Ty Doran, Holly Taylor, Ellen Tamaki, Garrett Wareing, Jared Grimes, Ali Lopez-Sohaili and more who each provide generally solid performances as a whole and contribute nicely to the overall series, helping to keep the emotional aspects within working rather smoothly throughout.
‘Manifest’ delivers a tense, mysterious and mind-twisting tale that only becomes stranger, more engaging and complex as it progresses, just as the life as the passengers from the mysterious flight find their worlds in increasing disarray. It’s a series that never hesitates to take what you think you know and turn it around on you, delivering no shortage of memorable twists, turns and shocking moments at the viewer throughout its sixty-two episode run. It’s a fascinating series and one that will keep you guessing and thinking on a consistent basis, while even getting under your skin at times as things becoming increasingly dire and even occasionally bleak for these folks.
The series ran for three seasons on NBC before being canceled after a whopper of a third season finale packed with cliffhangers and some heartbreak. Its popularity streaming on Netflix led to the streamer resurrecting the series for a twenty episode final season split into two volumes of ten episodes each which seem to basically serve as what would have been the planned fourth and fifth seasons more or less and thank goodness for that because this is one show that fans desperately needed a conclusion to and in that respect Netflix was very much their guardian angel that kept it alive and allowed it to arrive at its planned and emotional conclusion which does leave a handful of questions unanswered but is still largely rewarding nonetheless. As a whole the series makes for a wild, mind blowing ride into uncertainty that evolves well beyond the laws of reality time and again, yet in the best ways possible.
‘Manifest’ flies into your home on Blu-ray in its entirety courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. The 13-disc ‘Manifest: The Complete Series’ Blu-ray collection features solid high definition video presentations on all sixty-two episodes from all four seasons of the series and in far superior quality compared to the previously released DVD set of the show. The nice HD video presentations are only further complemented by immersive and often fairly hard hitting multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtracks that have the series looking and sounding as good as it ever has, especially on disc.
While the video and audio presentations deliver very capably across the board and should surely thrill fans who would like to physically own this one on Blu-ray, the set is absent of any bonus material and does follow Warner’s recent trend of being issued in a DVD-sized Epik-Pak case that overlaps the discs, yet fortunately at least doesn’t double or triple stack them this time around. While the packaging and lack of extras may disappoint some, if you simply would like to own the series in its entirety on Blu-ray, then this complete series collection should be worth picking up and is definitely recommended at the right price.
VIDEO:
The Blu-ray release of ‘Manifest: The Complete Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with its original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on every episode of all four seasons. The video presentations look very good altogether and while perhaps not utterly flawless deliver clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentations on every episode that never suffer from any notable issues or troubles. Detail is rewarding on characters, backgrounds and everything else while colors are rich and vibrant and black levels hold up capably throughout. Overall, these are solid high definition video presentations that are certainly a huge upgrade from the DVD release(s) and should please fans who would love to physically own the entire series in HD.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 62 episodes of the series. These multichannel soundtracks offer clean, crisp and fairly aggressive audio presentations on each episode. They regularly take advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, action and supernatural effects, ground trembling, crowd chatter and plenty more repeatedly zipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never negatively impacting any dialogue or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously. Overall, these are pretty great 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that make a wonderful complement to the onscreen tension and excitement and shouldn’t disappoint.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The Blu-ray release of ‘Manifest: The Complete Series’ does not include any bonus material.
