Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. The Conjuring tells the horrifying true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, world renowned paranormal investigators, who were called to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

[4K Ultra HD Review] The Conjuring; Now Available From Warner Bros 1

Inspired by the case files of renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, ‘The Conjuring’ accompanies the couple as they are confronted by a terrifying evil when they are asked to investigate a series of strange happenings at a local farm house where a family of seven has recently moved in. As their investigation uncovers a sinister demonic entity yet with evil, unknown intentions in store for the family, Ed and Lorraine must tackle a terrifying chain of events and find a way to stop the demonic force before it’s able to complete its horrifying goal.

‘The Conjuring’ is directed by James Wan from a screenplay written by Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes, with Wan doing a tremendous job at the helm guiding along the eerie and unsettling ride with his unique brand of style and care. The film’s cast includes Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Hayley McFarland, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver and more, with the majority offering capable if not notable performances in their respective roles throughout which each help to make this terrifying tale work as marvelously as it does.

[4K Ultra HD Review] The Conjuring; Now Available From Warner Bros 2

‘The Conjuring’ was first unleashed upon unsuspecting moviegoers in the summer of 2013 and delivered a powerful, horrifying and beautifully crafted supernatural horror film that has since expanded with three direct sequels (the last of which is set to be released theatrically in September of this year) as well as some spinoffs and their own sequels on top of it. One thing that’s for certain is that ‘The Conjuring’ hasn’t lost its luster or ability to terrify in the twelve years since it was initially released and even revisiting it to review this 4K release after plenty of revisits over the years it still manages to creep me out a bit, something that most films aren’t so easily capable of doing at this point in my life.

James Wan has an impeccable talent for making things work and enhancing the smallest, creepy moments thanks to his unique directing choices and this is only one of many outstanding horror films of his that have thus far stood the test of time in my book. ‘The Conjuring’ doesn’t just benefit from Wan’s unique style either, with the tremendous cast, perfectly selected shooting locations and much more all coming together in order to make this into what I referred to in my original 2013 Blu-ray review as a truly terrifying masterpiece of modern horror” and that has not changed whatsoever in the 12 years since. If you’re a horror fan that’s never had the pleasure of ‘The Conjuring’ then it’s probably time to make a point of rectifying that, because this one is definitely not to be missed.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Conjuring’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 2.40:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks great as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any notable issues or problems to be uncovered throughout. Detail is tremendous on character faces and attire, along with the haunting images, backgrounds and most everything else on display at one point or another. The HDR-10 further complements the presentation by enhancing various colors throughout such as pieces of clothing and more, while black levels are deep and clean. Overall, this is a very nice Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up capably throughout and should excite fans who have been awaiting a 4K upgrade for the film.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack appears to be identical to that included on the original 2013 Blu-ray release but rest assured that’s not a problem because this multichannel soundtrack still packs one impressive punch and offers a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send everything from music to creaks, creepy noises and plenty more throughout the various speakers quite regularly, while never causing any simultaneously occurring dialogue or other audio elements to become negatively affected in the process. Overall, this is a great 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that perfectly complements the onscreen scares and tension.
