Synopsis:

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ joins four random misfits as they unintentionally embark on the adventure of a lifetime. A store owner and washed up video game champion, along with a struggling realtor and mobile zoo owner, a young woman and her younger brother who she is now in charge of all come together when a mysterious trinket sends them into a strange world of block-like environments where danger and wonder await. As if that wasn’t strange enough, the group will have to figure out this mysterious world while joining forces with a local legend and Minecraft pro and take on the evil forces that plague the world if they want to stand any chance of getting back home.

Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre), from a screenplay written by Chris Bowman & Hubbel Palmer (Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life) and Neil Widener (Subdivision Colorado) & Gavin James (Footsteps) and Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer), from a story by Allison Schroeder and Bowman & Palmer, Hess does a solid job at the helm of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ guiding along the silly fun with humor, heart and style. The film’s cast includes Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Jack Black (Dear Santa), Emma Myers (TV’s Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (TV’s Peacemaker), Sebastian Hansen (TV’s Lisey’s Story) and Jennifer Coolidge (TV’s The White Lotus) who each offer capable and fitting performances in their roles.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ is a goofy, funny and surprisingly enjoyable ride into the world of one of the biggest games every created along with a hilariously mismatched group of adventurers. The film doesn’t seem to worry about following familiar tropes and patterns and a great deal of the story progression as well as the few minor surprises are anything but unpredictable and I think it’s safe to say that none of it is going to attract much awards attention. Yet, even while it may not be a great film altogether or even overly original, it really is incredibly entertaining and funny, especially for fans of Jack Black and Jason Momoa as the pair is quite a ridiculous treat throughout and a constant joy to behold their willingness to jump full on into the ridiculousness of it all.

Let’s not ignore just how glorious ‘A Minecraft Movie’ looks visually either because the creation of the Minecraft world and its inhabitants is rewarding in its own right and impressive to behold when you start to really pay attention to the intricacies of the surroundings and take it all in. The film also plays it relatively safe when it comes to the content and aside from some indirect sexual innuendo and gags, it should be a fairly safe selection for the entire family to enjoy together.

Overall, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ delivers a humorous, fast-paced and visually stellar ride that may not be a tremendous film as a whole, but sure is a great deal of fun nonetheless, with a perfectly selected cast and a fittingly silly tone to help propel it all along. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ may not be everyone’s thing, but for families, those with kids at home and those of you fellow adults that appreciate a lighthearted and just unapologetically fun ride to get away with should all find plenty to appreciate with this one, and even more so if you’re a fan of stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa who are both wildly entertaining and even more amusing when sharing the screen and bouncing off of one another. If you’re already intrigued and would like to give it a whirl, it should certainly be worth a rental if nothing else.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty spectacular as a whole and it offers a clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that’s brimming with color and style, while absent of any noticeable issues to be uncovered along the way. Detail is great on characters, the intricately crafted surroundings of the worlds and just about everything else appearing onscreen at one point or another, while the Dolby Vision HDR does a nice job of improving many of the colors and providing some extra pop, and black levels are clean, deep and problem free throughout. Overall, this is a very nice Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up splendidly throughout and shouldn’t elicit any complaints from fans or newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a definite treat on its own and it provides a crisp, clean and immersive audio presentation throughout. It consistently takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, chatter, action and vehicle effects, plus plenty more repeatedly zipping throughout the various speakers at every fitting opportunity, and never negatively impacting any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously. Overall, this is a wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that perfectly complements the silly fun throughout and should excite viewers.
