Synopsis:
First dates can be rough. In this mind-bending action thriller from the director of Happy Death Day, they can also be deadly. Violet (Meghann Fahy, The White Lotus) is a widowed mother who has worked up the courage to go on her first date in years with a charming photographer named Henry. The cute couple’s killer chemistry is rudely interrupted by a series of anonymous drops to Violet’s phone showing a masked intruder entering her home and ordering her to follow a series of instructions. Violet must do exactly as she’s told or her loved ones will die. Her unseen tormentor’s final directive? Kill Henry.
‘Drop’ joins single mother Violet who has finally started to bounce back from an abusive relationship that saw a horrible end. After years of dedicating herself solely to her son’s well-being, Violet has met a seemingly decent guy named Henry and decides to finally go out on her first date with him at a fancy restaurant. Upon her arrival everything seems to be normal enough and when her date arrives he seems to match the kindhearted man she’d been speaking with for months. But when the date starts and Violet begins being assaulted with airdrop (or Digidrop) messages, it soon turns dangerous when she realizes they intend to kill her son if she doesn’t cooperate. Hesitant but willing to play along for the sake of her child, everything goes truly south when she discovers that what they really want is for her to kill Henry.
Directed by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) from a screenplay written by Jillian Jacobs & Chris Roach (Truth Or Dare), Landon does a tremendous job at the helm of ‘Drop’ guiding along the stylish fun and tension with constant beauty and care. The film’s cast includes Meghann Fahy (TV’s The White Lotus), Brandon Sklenar (TV’s 1923), Violett Beane (Truth or Dare) and Jeffery Self (The High Note) along with more and most offer generally solid or at least capable performances in each of their respective roles that help this tale to work so splendidly.
‘Drop’ is a tremendously crafted thriller that melds together aspects of our modern society and technology with the basics and vibe of old school mystery films from decades ago. Featuring fleshed out characters that we can actually care about thanks to the plot’s ability to keep the tension mounting along with the threat while also offering a great deal of opportunity to become intimately familiar with both of these characters as everything progresses. Even with the ever building tension and tightknit story that interweaves cleverly into the depths of these characters and their pasts, the backdrop itself ends up being just as crucial to the film.
The elegance of the high end restaurant in which the majority of the film plays out radiates a sense of beauty and calmness that is perfectly unbalanced by the intimate chaos that Violet is suffering as she desperately tries to find any means of gaining the upper hand over someone whose reach seems to constantly envelop her. The capable guidance of director Christopher Landon contributes a nicely suited style and the talented cast only helps to perfectly propel the story along. Throw in some unique points of view, fast moving camera shifts and a visually a pleasing environment and it all contributes to the balance of beauty and terror that help ‘Drop’ become something quite special.
Overall, ‘Drop’ is a solid, smart and simple thriller that takes a fairly generic approach and repeatedly finds clever ways to transform it into something unique and incredibly entertaining; with a visually stunning setting that contrasts the terror and tension on hand in the best way possible. ‘Drop’ is very highly recommended for fans of director Christopher Landon, they key cast or anyone that appreciates a tremendously crafted thriller that seems to seamlessly merge together our modern society and technology with the basics and vibe of old school mystery films from decades prior. It’s a simple film that manages to use its familiar approach to its benefit and if you missed it in theaters but have been looking forward to it whatsoever then this one should at the very least be worth renting to give a whirl.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Drop’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks incredibly nice as a whole and it provides a sharp, richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected issues to be uncovered throughout and is brimming with color and style at every turn. Detail is spectacular on character faces and clothing, along with the appearance of the stunning high end restaurant in which most of it plays out. The Dolby Vision HDR enhances many of the surroundings and clothing by offering more vibrant and lifelike coloring paired with rich, deep and problem free black levels. Overall, this is a great Ultra High Definition presentation that should have fans and first time viewers extremely pleased.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack also does its job very well and offers a clean, crisp and fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all seven available channels regularly in order to send music, crowd chatter and a fair bit more repeatedly moving throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a very nice Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that holds up splendidly throughout and shouldn’t disappoint whatsoever.
