‘A Working Man’ joins an ex-soldier named Levon Cade who is trying to work a steady construction job and be a capable father while putting his violent days as a black ops soldier behind him. But when his boss’s daughter is taken by a group of criminals linked to human trafficking and other dangerous criminal enterprises, Levon cannot resist the plea from the parents who he considers family to track down and return their daughter. As Levon returns to his old mindset and begins wreaking havoc on those involved one by one, he soon uncovers a massive world of corruption that will only complicate things, but fortunately he’s not one to be intimidated or to give up.
Directed by David Ayer (The Beekeeper, End of Watch) from a screenplay that he additionally co-wrote with Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), and based on the book ‘Levon’s Trade’ by Chuck Dixon, Ayer does a nice job at the helm of ‘A Working Man’ guiding along the action-packed fun with style and even some heart at times. The film’s cast includes Jason Statham (The Beekeeper), Jason Flemyng (The 355), Merab Ninidze (Conclave), Maximillian Osinski (TV’s Ted Lasso), Cokey Falkow (The Expendables 4), Michael Peña (Unstoppable) and David Harbour (Violent Night), with the majority offering capable or at the very least fitting performances in each of their respective roles.

‘A Working Man’ serves up a fun, brutal and thrilling ride that once again reteams director David Ayer and star Jason Statham for an explosive action film more along the lines of what you’d see in the 1980’s. The film doesn’t go out of its way to try to do anything overly unique, original or clever with the material, yet its willingness to stick to basics and just deliver a wild, violent ride is a big part of what makes it so appealing. Much like the pair’s last collaboration ‘The Beekeeper’ it delivers exactly what fans of films like this want to see; a simplistic, somewhat generic, yet exciting, violent and stylish action film that has fun with everything and utilizes a familiar type of story to propel the action and excitement along throughout.
Statham once again proves why he’s still one of the remaining true old school action stars and it’s great to see him able to continually make films such as this that provide an opportunity for him to show off his grit and fighting talents. It’s somewhat of a shame that these type of macho action films have become so less common in today’s world because I’ve always had a soft spot for them and appreciate their willingness to give us what we want without trying to unnecessarily spruce everything up for no logical reason and ‘A Working Man’ is quite simply a blast.

Overall, ‘A Working Man’ is brutal, fun and at times flashy in its style, while always sticking to the basics and providing fans with a simple, yet immensely entertaining action film that’s reminiscent of the blockbuster action pictures of decades prior; once again making a solid team-up between David Ayer and Jason Statham following ‘The Beekeeper’ which followed the same general formula and was also a great deal of fun. ‘A Working Man’ is highly recommended for anyone that enjoys simple, violent action films that know exactly what they want to be and deliver just that from start to finish. If you’re even slightly interested in the film and you tend to enjoy Statham’s similar action movies, then this one should certainly be worth the price of a rental and a couple hours of your time to give a shot.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘A Working Man’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks marvelous and delivers a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected issues to be found along the way. Detail is tremendous on character faces and clothing, along with the action sequences and just about everything else which all holds up nicely at every turn. The HDR complements a great deal of it by providing more sharp and lifelike coloring on vehicles, clothing and other elements along the way, while black levels are deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a spectacular Ultra High Definition presentation that shouldn’t have trouble pleasing fans and newcomers alike.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a definite treat in itself and it provides a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, gunshots, debris and a great deal more consistently zipping throughout the various speakers at every reasonable opportunity, while never clashing with or negatively affecting any dialogue or other simultaneously occurring audio elements along the way. Overall, this is a magnificent Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that repeatedly impresses and never disappoints.
