Synopsis:

Set in 1991 Miami, DEXTER®: ORIGINAL SIN follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Golden Globe® winner Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ takes viewers back to Miami in 1991 as we join a crucial moment in Dexter Morgan’s life; his evolution from struggling student and outsider to his paid internship with the Miami Metro Police Department and the beginning of his murderous ways as he evolves into the serial killer we know. The prequel series chronicles Dexter’s first kill and his introduction to working as a member of law enforcement, as well as the earlier days of his sister Deb who begins to find her intended path and his adoptive father and mentor Harry as he tries to instill the code that Dexter will spend many years living by in order to protect himself and those closest to him.

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ was created for television by Clyde Phillips who also serves as showrunner and executive producer. The perfectly selected cast of the prequel series includes Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson and Patrick Dempsey, along with special guest star Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michael C. Hall as the voice of adult Dexter, with nearly all offering impressive and familiar performances in each of their respective roles that are so flawlessly casted you can almost believe many are younger versions of the stars from the original series.

The debut season of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ is a splendidly fun, twisted and well-crafted prequel series that’s an absolute blast at every twist and turn, not to mention a true treat that ‘Dexter’ fans won’t even want to consider missing out on. It’s a spectacular series that only manages to greatly exceed expectations and also delve into some interesting places as well as few I must admit I didn’t expect or see coming.

Even while ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ has a whole lot going for it from story to style and its enjoyable way of transporting us back to the early ‘90s (the police raid in episode one set to “Ice Ice Baby” perfectly sets the tone) the best aspect of the series has to be the impeccable casting for the younger versions of all these familiar characters. Not only does nearly everyone capture the mannerisms, dialect and other key aspects of these individuals, but they look so perfect in appearance it’s almost as if they went back in time and recruited younger versions of each star from the original. It’s also worth noting that while many (including myself) expected it to be a one off limited series it has in fact now been officially renewed for a second season so it appears our exciting journey into Dexter’s earlier days hasn’t run its course just yet and I for one couldn’t be more excited to see where it might take us next.

All ten episodes from the debut season of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ arrive home courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment in a 3-disc Blu-ray collection that delivers incredibly solid high definition video presentations for every episode of the season, with the ten episodes split between the three discs for optimum quality. The notable video presentations are only further enhanced by immersive and capable Dolby TrueHD multichannel soundtracks on every episode, in addition to a never before seen Behind the Scenes Featurette on top of it. The set is available on both a standard Blu-ray release and via a Steelbook Blu-ray edition which is the version Paramount sent over for review and includes a glossy, sturdy steelbook case with exclusive artwork both inside and out. If you’re a fan of the ‘Dexter’ franchise that would love to physically own the prequel series on Blu-ray, then this 3-disc set is recommended and should not disappoint.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 2.00:1 aspect ratio on every episode of the debut season. The video presentations look fantastic as a whole and provide clean, richly detailed presentations on every episode of the first season without any notable faults to be uncovered along the way. Detail is tremendous on characters, settings and everything else on display at one point or another, while coloring is vibrant and stellar and black levels are rich, deep and absent of any troubles. Overall, these are wonderful high definition video presentations that hold up well at every turn and should easily please fans.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on all 10 Season One episodes. These multichannel soundtracks are very nice in their own right and they offer crisp, clean and immersive audio presentations for each episode. They consistently utilize all five available channels in order to send music, action and vehicle effects, along with nature content, crowd chatter and plenty more whipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while never resulting in any dialogue or other simultaneously occurring audio elements becoming distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, these are great 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks that deliver nicely in every way required of them.

The Blu-ray release of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ features one notable extra; the Behind the Scenes Featurette ‘Dissecting Dexter: Original Sin’ (running approximately 9 minutes length) which includes interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more.
