’11 Rebels’ tells the story of ten convicts set for execution during the Boshin War who are promised freedom in exchange for using their fighting abilities to defend a small town in feudal Japan and protect a fortress with enemies expected imminently. Willing to serve in exchange for their freedom, things become more uncertain when it’s discovered that those in charge have no intention whatsoever of honoring that promise. Now this group will have to try and find a way to change their own fate amid the fight or at the very least die trying.

Directed by Kazuya Shiraishi (The Blood of Wolves, The Devil’s Path) from an original story by Kazuo Kasahara and a screenplay by Jun’ya Ikegami, Kazuya does a great job at the helm of ’11 Rebels’ capably guiding along the heart, chaos and action-packed excitement throughout. The film’s cast includes Takayuki Yamada (13 Assassins), Taiga Nakano (Under the Open Sky), Ukon Onoe (Hell Dogs), Riho Sayashi, Takara Sakumoto (Rage), and Seiji Chihara (TV’s Ataru), with the majority each offer fitting performances for the most part in their respective roles.

’11 Rebels’ delivers a tense, exciting and nicely crafted tale of a group of convicts offered a chance at freedom for a cost and the painstaking fight, loss and perseverance that they showcase along the way, even when everything seems repeatedly hopeless in the process. Taking place during the Boshin War many years ago in Japan, the film offers up a heartfelt look at the struggles of these individuals and their willingness to do whatever it takes to fight for another day, as well as the hesitation when things go wrong. Filled with gorgeous action, brutality and plenty of heart, it’s part war film, part samurai epic and above all it’s a tale of hope, loss and violence amid a tumultuous time.

Fans of Japanese cinema should find plenty of appreciate about this epic, action-packed journey and the beauty and care put into the fight sequences in particular which are undeniably the standout element of the tale, often with body parts flying in every direction. The only notable area where the film is lacking is in its background, and while we do have the opportunity to become familiar with most of the characters and their individual strengths and weaknesses, it does still feel somewhat lacking in that department at times but fortunately many shouldn’t have too much trouble letting this go considering just how strong the other elements are within.

Overall, ’11 Rebels’ is a brutal, bloody and enjoyable ride that’s filled with stunning action sequences, a powerful story and a collection of capable stars making up the ragtag group of convicts forced to fight against unthinkable odds for the promise of freedom; with the solid guidance of director Kazuya Shiraishi only further benefitting the tense and violent tale. ’11 Rebels’ is definitely recommended for any fans of Japanese cinema and for those who tend to appreciate an action film that never pulls its punches when it comes to the tension and brutality. If you’re intrigued by the film but are hesitant to drop the money on a blind purchase, then ’11 Rebels’ should at the very least be worth your time and the cost of a rental to give a chance whenever you have some free time.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ’11 Rebels’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that holds up beautifully without ever suffering from any unexpected issues along the way. Detail is tremendous on character specifics, surroundings and the expansive fight sequences, along with just about everything else, while colors are sharp and clean and black levels are deep and rich. Overall, this is a great high definition video presentation that shouldn’t have any trouble pleasing those who aren’t fully 4K capable (and even those that are if you want to save a few bucks).

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack presented in the film’s native Japanese language (please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation), in addition to a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack featuring the English Dubbed version. I watched the film with the Dolby Atmos Japanese soundtrack utilized (although in the base 7.1 Dolby TrueHD format as my system doesn’t support Atmos) and that multichannel soundtrack serves up a crisp, clean and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a whirlwind of music, action effects, dialogue and a great deal more repeatedly zipping throughout the various speakers while never negatively impacting any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously. Overall, this is a magnificent Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that impresses at every turn and should thrill viewers.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ’11 Rebels’ includes the English Dubbed version of the film (in addition to the original Japanese language version with English Subtitles) and the film’s ‘Trailer’ (running approximately 2 minutes in length).
