‘The Woman in the Yard’ follows a mother and her two children who are struggling to maintain their new home and everything else while grieving the death of her husband. But when a mysterious woman draped in black from head to toe suddenly appears sitting in the middle of their yard on a chair it sends things to an even more concerning place, especially once the stranger delivers a cryptic message. As the figure begins to get continually closer to the home, the family starts to panic while trying to uncover the purpose of her arrival and what she wants.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Black Adam, Run All Night) from a screenplay written by Sam Stefanak (TV’s F is For Family), Collet-Serra does a great job at the helm of ‘The Woman in the Yard’ guiding along the somewhat simplistic tale with style and repeatedly making unique choices to help it stand out. The cast of the film includes Danielle Deadwyler (I Saw the TV Glow), Okwui Okpokwasili (The Exorcist: Believer), Peyton Jackson (Respect), and Russell Hornsby (TV’s BMF) with most offering generally solid and fitting performances for the most part in each of their respective roles.

[Blu-Ray Review] The Woman In The Yard; Now Available From Universal 1

‘The Woman in the Yard’ is an intriguing film that tackles a somewhat normal scenario and explores the struggle of grief and attempting to move on, merely with a few eerie and unusual twists that allow the story to build while the viewer attempts to figure out precisely what is occurring. As always I won’t get into spoiler territory and will try to offer some insight without ruining the film for newcomers; the story doesn’t always stand out and it never gets too wild or out there, instead delivering a supernatural-like tale that’s largely grounded in reality and that deals with some real life struggles, something that both benefits it at times while also occasionally harming it at others.

Even while much of the tale and activity may not be overly impressive or noteworthy, the manner in which it’s built and expanded upon are notable, and the gorgeous camera shots and clever shooting style always help it to feel like something more as many beautifully crafted shots tend to be some of the film’s most standout moments. The cast is largely rewarding and even if not everyone is flawless, the majority offer worthy performances for the most part that help to make this emotional film work as well as it does and not fall into the territory of ridiculous or cheesy. All of these positive elements in its favor do help substantially and while it never quite becomes a fantastic film as a whole, it allows it to at least build to something above average and most importantly, it keeps you interested and locked in for nearly its entirety duration.

Overall, ‘The Woman in the Yard’ is an interesting and often fairly creepy tale of one family struggling with grief that’s faced with a mysterious stranger and a plethora of odd occurrences. ‘The Woman in the Yard’ may not be anything that will shake up the awards season or end up on many best of lists, yet I would recommend it to genre fans who haven’t yet had a chance to check it out as many are likely to appreciate the unique tale on its own, along with the clever shooting style and manner of approaching it which repeatedly stand out and complement it. I would encourage renting it before dropping the money on a blind purchase if you haven’t seen it yet just to be safe as many might not be interested in revisiting it on a regular basis.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Woman in the Yard’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very good altogether and provides a sharp, clean and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any notable issues or troubles to be uncovered along the way. Detail is great on character faces and clothing, along with the gloomy interiors of the farm house and the more colorful, expansive land surrounding it, while colors are clean and black levels remain largely deep and rich throughout. Overall, this is a solid high definition video presentation that holds up capably and should please both first time viewers and fans.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack delivers a clean, crisp and often aggressive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all seven available channels somewhat frequently in order to send music, creepy and nature-related effects, plus a fair bit more moving throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while never causing any dialogue or other simultaneously occurring audio elements to become negatively affected in the process. Overall, this is a great 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that nicely complements the onscreen tension and unease and shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Woman in the Yard’ includes a couple entertaining extras that fans of the film should enjoy. Included on the release are a pair of Behind the Scenes Featurettes ‘Making The Woman in the Yard’ (running approximately 8 minutes in length) and ‘Beneath the Veil’ (running approximately 5 minutes).
