Synopsis:

Starring Oscar®* winner Billy Bob Thornton and from co-creators Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, LANDMAN is set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas and is a modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.

‘Landman’ invites viewers into the boomtowns of West Texas and revolves around those working on various ends of the oil business from the roughnecks risking their lives every day to the billionaires controlling the moves behind the scenes; primarily focusing on a Landman named Tommy Norris as he spends his days (and often nights) balancing the dirtier aspects of the job and helping where needed while trying to find time to spend with his daughter visiting on spring break and his ex-wife who reappears and he just can’t quite manage to turn away. But when a handful of critical problems land on Tommy’s plate, things are only going to get a whole lot more difficult before they get better.

‘Landman’ was created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, with Sheridan also writing every episode of the first season (as he so often tends to do) as well as directing a pair. The series also features a stellar and talented cast that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, Paulina Chávez, Kayla Wallace, Colm Feore, James Jordan, Mark Collie, along with Jon Hamm and Demi Moore, with nearly all offering capable performances in their respective roles and helping to benefit the series in one way or another.

The debut season of ‘Landman’ offers a tense, funny and fascinating look into the world of the oil business revolving around West Texas and delving into the everyday lives of many involved from those doing the brutal patch work to those controlling the moves remotely while enjoying a life of luxury. It primarily focuses on Landman Tommy Norris who is perfectly portrayed by the talented Billy Bob Thornton and even after the first episode it’s nearly impossible to imagine anyone else being able to capture this character so flawlessly and balance the grit, determination and snarky personality that he exudes. As is often the case with shows crafted by TV mastermind Taylor Sheridan, there’s no shortage of rough moments and tension sprinkled throughout, yet ‘Landman’ also has a surprising amount of humor and is able to have you cringing or uncomfortable one moment only to have you laughing uncontrollably the next which isn’t always the easiest task to accomplish and make work so smoothly.

The series does a fantastic job of showcasing the various highs and lows that accompany jobs in the industry and also never shying away from the more brutal aspects such as accidents and even lives lost when something goes wrong and that one moment doesn’t allow for any room to maneuver before it’s too late. If you’re a fan of Taylor Sheridan’s work or of lead star Billy Bob Thornton, then ‘Landman’ should have no trouble pulling you in and keeping you there and I would strongly encourage giving it a shot if you haven’t yet had the pleasure but are even the slightest bit intrigued.

The first season of ‘Landman’ arrives home in its entirety courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment and the 3-disc ‘Landman: Season One’ Blu-ray release serves up all ten episodes of the season with very nice high definition presentations spread between three discs for optimum quality. The great video presentations are only further complemented by rewarding multichannel Dolby TrueHD soundtracks on every episode and nearly an hour and a half of entertaining extras that take you into bringing the show to life. It’s a solid Blu-ray release for a pretty fantastic debut season of what seems to be another clear winner from TV creating powerhouse Taylor Sheridan, with a truly outstanding cast led by Billy Bob Thornton to back it up. Fans of ‘Landman’ that would love to physically own the first season should have no complaints about the Blu-ray release and if you’re already considering a purchase it’s definitely recommended.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Landman: Season One’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 2.00:1 aspect ratio on every episode of the debut season. The video presentations look pretty great as a whole and they offer sharp, clean and nicely detailed presentations from start to finish on every episode of the season, while never suffering from any unexpected issues arising along the way. Detail is rewarding on character faces and clothing, along with the expansive landscapes of Texas and the various interior and outdoor settings on display throughout. Coloring is sharp and rewarding, while black levels also remain deep, clean and problem-free for the most part. Overall, these are solid high definition video presentations that hold up well at every turn and should please fans of the series and newcomers.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on all 10 Season One episodes. These multichannel soundtracks deliver clean, crisp and frequently immersive audio presentations for every episode of the debut season. They take advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, explosions, crowd chatter, nature content and vehicle activity, plus quite a bit more consistently zipping throughout the various speakers at every reasonable opportunity, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible at all times. Overall, these are very nice 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks that repeatedly complement the series and shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Landman: Season One’ offers a nice collection of bonus material in the way of various Behind the Scenes Featurettes that dive deeper into the show and bringing it to life, along with some fun videos and crew discussions. The Featurettes and videos include ‘Constant Crisis: The Path to Landman’ (running approximately 31 minutes in length), ‘Passion and Poise: Tommy & Angela/ Cami & Monty’ (running approximately 10 minutes), ‘Welcome to the Patch: Pyrotechnics and Stunts’ (approximately 15 minutes), ‘Landman: Inside the Series’ (22 minutes), plus ‘Landman: Meet the Millers’ (2 minutes), ‘Landman: The Best of Tommy’ (2 minutes), ‘Roughnecking It with Billy, James and Jacob’ (2 minutes), and ‘Digging Deep with the Cast of Landman’ (3 minutes).
