Synopsis:
A heart-pounding film that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped deep below the ocean’s surface. Based on a true story, Last Breath is an electrifying story about teamwork, resilience, and a race against time to do the impossible.
Based on a true story, ‘Last Breath’ joins a crew of saturation divers as violent weather occurring during a repair in the darks of the ocean floor results in one man becoming trapped below with nothing but a ten minute reserve tank of air to survive with. As those in control of the boat and the others on his team race against time to try and find a way to get back down and save him before all is lost, nature continually tries to thwart them at every turn. Even as oxygen runs out and things become all the more dire, nothing will stop them from finding a way to retrieve their friend.
Directed by Alex Parkinson (who also co-directed the 2019 Documentary of the same name) from a screenplay written by Mitchell LaFortune and Alex Parkinson & David Brooks and based on the Documentary “Last Breath” by MetFilm, Parkinson does a solid job at the helm of ‘Last Breath’ guiding along the shocking and tense true story with heart and care. The film’s cast includes Woody Harrelson (Champions), Simu Liu (Barbie), Finn Cole (F9: The Fast Saga) and Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of Water), along with more and nearly all offer capable and decent performances for the most part in their respective roles.
‘Last Breath’ is a tense, fascinating and generally well-constructed take on the true tale and based on the 2019 documentary of the same name (which was also co-directed by Parkinson) that may not manage to perfectly nail every aspect and element within, but nonetheless stays true to the reality and terrifying nature of the story without losing its way in the process. Things typically look quite capable on the production end including a handful of gorgeous visuals that promptly catch your attention, yet the heart and bond of the individuals within as well as their determination to not leave their crewmate behind is where the film truly shines and pulls the viewer in.
Alex Parkinson does a commendable job in the director’s chair guiding the true tale along and considering that he also co-directed the Documentary on which it’s based, his familiarity with the subject matter surely doesn’t hurt. His work behind the camera is only further complemented by a talented cast led by Woody Harrelson and it all helps to allow us to truly care about those within and become more invested. It has a tendency to drag somewhat on occasion and not every single scene or moment completely lands or resonates, yet at the same time it does provide for numerous chances to get familiar with and understand everyone a little better.
Overall, ‘Last Breath’ is a largely enjoyable, often intense and fairly emotional adaptation of the true story and Documentary of the same name, and while perhaps not a perfect film in every way, it does a commendable job of bringing the true story to life with care, not to mention with a talented cast led by Woody Harrelson to help it along. ‘Last Breath’ is recommended for anyone that appreciates a fascinating true story rich with hope, danger and a fight against the odds, or if you’re a fan of the original Documentary that it was based upon. If you’re interested in the film but understandably hesitant to drop the money on a blind purchase, then it should be a perfect option to rent one evening and give a whirl whenever you have the chance.
VIDEO:
The Blu-ray release of ‘Last Breath’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very nice as a whole and provides a sharp, richly detailed presentation throughout that holds up quite well without suffering from any unexpected issues to be uncovered along the way. Detail is solid throughout on characters, clothing and surroundings, while black levels hold up capably, even during some incredibly dark moments occurring on the ocean floor and colors are rich and sharp for the most part. Overall, this is a solid high definition presentation that does its job well and should satisfy fans as well as first time viewers.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack nicely complements the tension onscreen and delivers a crisp, clean and often fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all five available channels quite frequently throughout in order to send music, weather and water related effects, plus more moving throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements becoming negatively affected or rendered problematic at any point. Overall, this a pretty nice 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that sounds good at nearly every turn while pulling you more directly into the events with the immersion.
