Synopsis:
Marvin (Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan) left behind a violent life to hide in suburban Milwaukee as a mild-mannered realtor. He also left behind Rose (Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose), his former partner in crime. Now she’s back and wants Marvin to help take revenge against his crime lord brother, Knuckles (Daniel Wu). Like it or not, Marvin finds himself back in a wild world of wisecracking hitmen with his open houses erupting into warzones. He’ll need his lethal fighting skills, wit, and heroism to survive and save the day in this action/comedy epic from 87North, the producers of Nobody and Bullet Train.
‘Love Hurts’ joins pleasant and easygoing realtor Marvin who loves his life and has flourished in the field of selling houses. But when Marvin’s previous life of violence and brutality breaks into his new existence, he is forced to try and resolve past issues while trying to save the world he has built. When Marvin’s old love who was believed by many including his crime lord brother to be dead resurfaces looking for revenge against those who tried to kill her, Marvin will be forced to decide what is most important, especially when various henchman start to turn his life into a violent headache and threaten everything important to him.
Directed by Jonathan Eusebio from a screenplay written by Matthew Murray (Sheltered) & Josh Stoddard (TV’s Warrior) and Luke Passmore (Archenemy), Eusebio does a decent job at the helm of ‘Love Hurts’ which marks his directorial debut, guiding along some fun and notable action and humor but too frequently allows the film to be overtaken by its silly nature. The film’s cast includes Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Ariana DeBose (Kraven the Hunter), Daniel Wu (TV’s Westworld), Mustafa Shakir (Emancipation), Lio Tipton (Vengeance), Cam Gigandet (Violent Night) with Marshawn “Beastmode” Lynch (Bottoms) and Sean Astin (TV’s The Conners) who each deliver largely capable and decent performances in their respective roles but still aren’t quite able to save this one.
‘Love Hurts’ is an extremely goofy, over the top and at times painfully stupid action film that has its share of solid, brutal and even occasionally clever fight sequences, along with plenty of humor throughout, while approaching the action film more in the manner one might approach a cheesy romance movie. Even while that alone is clever in its own right, the over the top goofiness and repeated cringe-worthy moments become increasingly harder to ignore as they are served up repeatedly throughout its refreshingly brief 83 minute runtime, although fortunately the solid cast and few elements it manages to make work help it to at least also be pretty fun much of the time.
Talented and unavoidably lovable star Ke Huy Quan is certainly a joy in to watch in ‘Love Hurts’ as he typically is in most any role and Quan does what he can amid the silliness, but just like the film itself is too frequently bogged down by the stupidity that the movie seems intent to continue delivering in spades. The film’s general absence of story is also a factor working against it as the film seems more interested in finding ways to fit in illogical fights and other silly moments that occasionally land and contribute to the fun, but too often just fall flat and harm the tone as opposed to complementing it.
Overall, ‘Love Hurts’ is a goofy, over the top action romance that has some enjoyable action and amusing moments, along with another fun performance by Quan, yet it too frequently loses itself in its ridiculousness. While the film isn’t exactly great, it does have its charms and even if it won’t be for everyone ‘Love Hurts’ is recommended for anyone that’s a fan of star Ke Huy Quan or that often enjoys a somewhat silly and over the top action film that will have you shaking your head in wonder as often as eliciting a smile from the entertaining action sequences. For those interested in the movie who haven’t yet seen it, I would strongly encourage renting it before buying just to be safe because it seems safe to assume that not everyone will want to revisit this one time and again.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Love Hurts’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks outstanding as a whole and delivers a sharp, clean and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that always shines and never suffers from any unexpected or sudden issues to be found along the way. Detail is stellar on character faces and clothing, along with the various settings both indoor and exterior, while the Dolby Vision HDR boosts colors on clothing and backgrounds throughout and black levels are sharp, deep and absent of any troubles. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up at every turn and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a blast in its own right and it provides a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, action and nature effects, some crowd noise and more zipping throughout the various speakers at every reasonable opportunity, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements to become negatively affected or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, this is a wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that never loses its way and should easily excite fans and newcomers alike.
