Synopsis:

Best friends and roommates Dreux (KEKE PALMER) and Alyssa (SZA) are about to have ONE OF THEM DAYS. When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown the rent money, the duo find themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.

‘One of Them Days’ joins roommates and best friends Dreux and Alyssa who just can’t seem to catch a break. After their landlord gives them until that evening to pay their rent or find their stuff on the curb they are initially confused, at least until Dreux discovers that Alyssa gave the money to her troublesome boyfriend only for him to spend it on his own venture, leading the pair to hit the streets in an attempt to secure the money before it’s too late by any means possible. Yet as the day progresses and one idea after another falls apart, things only become increasingly more problematic for the duo proving that this is definitely going to be one of them days.

Directed by Lawrence Lamont (TV’s Rap Sh!t) from a screenplay written by Syreeta Singleton (TV’s Insecure), Lamont does a wonderful job at the helm of ‘One of Them Days’ capably guiding along the humorous fun and craziness. The film’s cast includes Keke Palmer (Nope), SZA (TV’s Insecure), Lil Rel Howery (Harold and the Purple Crayon), Janelle James (TV’s Abbott Elementary), Maude Apatow (TV’s Euphoria), Vanessa Bell Calloway (TV’s Shameless) and Katt Williams (TV’s Atlanta), with nearly all offering capable and fitting performances in each of their respective roles that help to keep the fun and humor coming at every turn.

‘One of Them Days’ is the kind of rewarding buddy comedy that we don’t see nearly often enough in today’s world. Delightfully silly, vulgar and consistently hilarious, it’s filled with plenty of unique characters and an abundance of bad luck and terrible situations occurring throughout that rarely fail to deliver hilariously unfortunate results. Our two leads end up being confronted with nearly every imaginable headache there is along the course of their turbulent day. The pair must tackle everything from the payday advance employee so willing to laugh at a credit score and the utterly terrifying and brutal side piece of Alyssa’s man who ends up at odds with the women and subsequently provides many of the movie’s most memorable and funny moments as she tears through the town like a force, down to the masked biscuit bandit who swoops by the drive thru at Church’s Chicken to steal orders, plus a whole lot of additional mishaps and headaches on top of it.

‘One of Them Days’ really manages to excel beyond so many other comedy films thanks to the heart of the characters which causes you to actually want to see them find a way to get the upper hand. The realistic manner and vibe of the world that somehow allows all of these ridiculous and over the top scenarios to work that much smoother also helps a great deal, causing the unexpected gags and tidbits throughout to feel that much funnier and more rewarding when they occur, and a largely solid cast led by the always enjoyable Keke Palmer only helps to really seal the deal and make this one evolve into something quite special, especially for this type of a vulgar comedy.

Overall, ‘One of Them Days’ is a wildly hilarious and enjoyable comedy that throws our leads into one humorous twist of fate after another that never fails to keep the ridiculous twists and turns coming and almost always with laugh out loud results; providing a nonstop good time that never loses its way and even manages to push beyond many of the clichés it falls into with heart, humor and plenty of unique characters. ‘One of Them Days’ is definitely recommended, especially for anyone that enjoys a fun and vulgar R-rated buddy comedy that knows precisely what it wants to be and does a tremendous job of accomplishing it. If you’re already even the slightest bit intrigued (or even perhaps if you’re not) I would strongly encourage giving this one a shot and you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised with just how funny and entertaining it manages to be.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘One of Them Days’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and offers a sharp, smooth and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s filled with vivid colors and detail throughout. Everything on display at one point or another looks tremendous, with character faces and clothing along with indoor and outdoor locations and everything else holding up extremely well, with capable black levels and shadowing to further complement it all. Overall, this is a wonderful high definition presentation that looks stellar at every turn and should thrill fans as well as newcomers.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack is quite nice in its own right and delivers a crisp, clean and at times surprisingly immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, crowd chatter, vehicle effects and plenty more moving throughout the various speakers quite frequently whenever fitting, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously with one another to become distorted or negatively affected in the process. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that delivers capably in every way required of it and shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘One of Them Days’ includes a few amusing extras that fans of the film should enjoy. Included on the release is ‘Just One of Them Gag Reels’ (running approximately 3 minutes in length), along with the Behind the Scenes Featurettes ‘Dream Team’ (running approximately 3 minutes) and ‘Block Party: The Cast’ (approximately 4 minutes). Also included is the brief silly video ‘What’s In My Bag with Lucky’ (approximately 1 minute).
