The beloved buddy comedy ‘Tommy Boy’ joins goofball Tommy Callahan, the kindhearted and carefree son of an auto-parts mogul who returns home to assist with the company following his extended stint in college. Upon arriving home he reunites with his loving father and is treated to the news that his dad is to be married. But when his father unexpectedly passes and the company’s future is on the line, Tommy must set out on the road with his dad’s right hand man Richard to try his hand at selling the company’s groundbreaking new part that could see the company saved if it can merely take off as expected. But with little experience and a lack of sense, the trip quickly leads to one hilarious mishap after another as the duo refuses to give up and pack it in.

‘Tommy Boy’ is directed by Peter Segal from a screenplay written by Bonnie Turner & Terry Turner, and Segal does a marvelous job guiding along the goofy, lovable and hilarious fun at every turn. The film also features a solid cast that includes Chris Farley, David Spade, Bo Derek, Brian Dennehy and Dan Aykroyd, along with a splendidly over the top, uncredited performance by Rob Lowe and the entire cast does a capable and fitting job for the most part in each of their respective roles, helping in their own right to make this one something truly special that’s also held up quite well over the years in most respects.

‘Tommy Boy’ first made its theatrical debut in March of 1995 and it still offers up a wildly hilarious, sweet and ridiculously over the top good time a whopping thirty years after its initial release. The film still manages to deliver countless laughs and an absolutely marvelous comedy pairing in Farley and Spade who are nothing short of magnificent together; the definition of comedic gold. A goofy road trip for the ages that’s consistently funny and even relatively touching in a few moments along the way, it’s the type of comedy outing that was quite frequent for ages but has sadly become increasingly less common in recent memory, but fortunately we at least still have plenty of iconic gems such as this to revisit. If you enjoy a great goofy comedy that isn’t afraid to get overly silly with its gags but you’ve never had the pleasure of ‘Tommy Boy’ then I would highly recommend rectifying that as soon as possible because this is one of the great ‘90s comedy films, a thoroughly hilarious buddy comedy that is quite simply not to be missed.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Tommy Boy’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10, newly remastered under the supervision of director Peter Segal and presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very nice as a whole and offers a largely clean, sharp and filmic presentation that aside from a few minor soft spots and lighter toned moments looks awfully stellar. Detail is great throughout and everything from character and vehicle specifics to the various locations on display throughout the road trip typically shine, while the Dolby Vision HDR does offer some fine-tuning on a few elements and black levels are rich, deep and clean. Overall, this is a pretty great Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up nicely in most respects and brings the film home looking better than it ever has prior.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack appears to be ported over from the Blu-ray release and should be identical. It offers a fully capable soundtrack that’s clean, sharp and occasionally somewhat immersive, something that shouldn’t be too surprising or problematic for a comedy such as this. It takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send some music and a few other tidbits throughout the various speakers when appropriate, while still ensuring that all dialogue and other audio elements remain consistently clean and fully audible at every turn. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that may not blow viewers away but does deliver in every way required of it.
