Synopsis:

In DEN OF THIEVES 2: PANTERA, Big Nick (Butler) is back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson), who is embroiled in the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves through the infamous Panther mafia, and their plot to pull off a massive heist of the world’s largest diamond exchange.

‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ rejoins hard-edged cop Big Nick as he continues to struggle with his personal life and refuses to let go of his personal vendetta against Donnie, the one person who managed to get the upper hand on him. Intent to settle things once and for all, he tracks down Donnie and forces himself into his crew for a massive upcoming heist that he and his new team are working on. Delving into a new world of thieves unlike anything in the states and with connections to the Panther mafia, Nick begins to get a taste of the other side, but will he be able to give up everything he spent his career on in favor of a more exciting and riveting life?

Written and directed by Christian Gudegast (Den of Thieves) who does a pretty great job back at the helm for ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ guiding the different, yet still very solid follow-up along with care and an eye for visual beauty throughout. The cast of the sequel includes Gerard Butler (Plane), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Cocaine Bear), Evin Ahmad (TV’s Who Is Erin Carter?), Salvatore Esposito (TV’s Fargo), Meadow Williams (Boss Level), Swen Temmel (Guy Ritchie’s the Covenant) and more who each offer capable performances for the most part in their respective roles.

‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ is a striking sequel that’s rich with visual splendor, moments of tension and a surprising amount of heart and humor on top of it all. It’s a very different film than its predecessor and showcases a drastically different type of criminal underworld and environment that’s not as flashy and in your face as those Big Nick typically came into contact with in Los Angeles, forcing him to rely on Donnie to some degree in order to learn the ropes and what is acceptable or problematic in this new world, something that certainly doesn’t come easy to a man of his reputation and style. As opposed to the first film’s cat and mouse thriller vibe, the sequel plays out more as an odd couple pairing as Nick joins Donnie’s team and gets involved in the heist this time around and the clashing personalities and banter between the pair offers plenty of fun and amusing moments throughout, with even a heartfelt moment or two occasionally shared in addition.

The real star of the sequel is the setting of Nice in France and Gudegast clearly knows it, never ignoring a moment to showcase expansive and sprawling views of the visual beauty and splendor along the way. ‘Den of Thieves 2’ may not have quite as much action as the first film and doesn’t offer any massive, groundbreaking twists like the first either, but it finds its strengths in other areas and takes care to delve into the world and those who populate it, altogether forming into a different but still quite solid and mesmerizing sequel that delivers another memorable ride with these characters.

Overall, ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ is a solid, engaging and visually spectacular sequel that takes things in a slightly different direction and tone this time around, and while lacking some of the elements that made the first one stand out, it instead finds its strengths in other areas in order to deliver a worthy follow-up that dares to do something moderately different. Even if it may be very different from its predecessor in many ways, ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ is highly recommended for fans of the first film who should still find plenty to love about this new installment and many will likely also appreciate its willingness to change things up and not simply recreate the first film as many sequels tend to these days. If you enjoyed the first film but haven’t yet had the pleasure of the sequel it should at the very least be worth the price of a rental and a couple hours of your time to check out.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks dazzling and it provides a clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any notable issues to be located along the way (although I would encourage watching this one in a dark environment as some of the darker scenes get exceptionally dark, at least with the Dolby Vision activated). Detail is marvelous throughout on everything from character faces and attire to the expansive views of the utterly beautiful settings and landscapes, while the Dolby Vision HDR enhances many moments throughout thanks to its contribution of more lifelike and vibrant colors on various elements from clothing to vehicles and backgrounds, and deep, clean and problem free black levels only seal the deal. Overall, this is a magnificent Ultra High Definition presentation that looks great at every turn and should thrill fans and first time viewers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack delivers splendidly in its own right and serves up a clean, crisp and notably immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all seven available channels quite regularly in order to send music, gunfire, vehicles and crowd chatter, along with plenty more repeatedly whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, all while never conflicting with or negatively affecting any simultaneously occurring dialogue or other audio elements. Overall, this is a fantastic Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that does its job well and never falters or disappoints.
