From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. ‘Gladiator II’ invites you to return to the Roman Colosseum to witness a new hero arise. The sequel picks up years after the first film’s conclusion and follows the return of Lucius as he loses everything due to an attack by the current reigning emperors. With nothing left to lose, he is purchased as a fighter and after proving his unique capabilities becomes a participant in a new batch of celebratory games in the colosseum where he quickly garners attention for his talents, but his intentions are simple enough; find a way to attain revenge against the General he holds responsible for murdering his true love.

Directed once again by legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott (Gladiator, The Martian) from a screenplay written by David Scarpa (Napoleon) and a story by Peter Craig and Scarpa, Scott does a solid job at the helm of ‘Gladiator II’ guiding along the epic follow-up with heart, tension and visual splendor. The cast of the sequel includes Paul Mescal (All of Us Strangers), Pedro Pascal (TV’s The Last of Us), Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One), Fred Hechinger (Nickel Boys), Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman) and Denzel Washington (The Equalizer 3) along with more and the majority each offer capable performances in their respective roles, although Washington frequently tends to steal the majority of scenes he occupies.

‘Gladiator II’ is an intense, engaging and visually stunning follow-up that may not quite recreate the level of magic that its predecessor managed but nonetheless does an admirable job following such a beloved and respected film and it gets much of it right, while offering some new turns and surprises along the way. The follow-up does naturally focus on a somewhat similar general scenario as the first film but instead of opting to simply recreate the original with different characters it wisely chooses to take things in some different and even clever directions as the full story of the tale begins to expand along its duration and things begin to lead down an intriguing path that actually contributes some new elements to benefit and build upon its predecessor.

Only two cast members return for the sequel, yet it still does a commendable job of staying true to the events of the first and building off of them in some fascinating ways while utilizing it as a launching point to angle toward these new directions and storylines. I always try to go into films (especially those I’m reviewing) with an open mind but there are also always exceptions like this where one can’t help but wonder how much a sequel to a film like ‘Gladiator’ can do to not only advance the story but offer something new to the tale and of course make it all worthwhile and to my slight surprise this one does a pretty competent job in all of those departments and by the halfway point or so I was fully invested in the new tale. This sequel perhaps shines most of all in its visual excellence and while the first looked outstanding and better than most films of the time, ‘Gladiator II’ easily looks superior in almost every conceivable way and the utter beauty of the effects, costumes and overall design are an absolute treat to behold on their own.

Overall, ‘Gladiator II’ delivers a powerful, beautifully crafted and at times quite emotional sequel that is handled with the utmost care by filmmaker Ridley Scott and ends up becoming something fairly special in its own right. While it may not be quite as phenomenal as its predecessor, ‘Gladiator II’ delivers a fairly impressive and meticulously crafted sequel that’s definitely recommended for anyone that enjoyed the first film. It’s a largely rewarding and utterly gorgeous looking follow-up that bothers to do something more than simply recreate the original and ends up being far better than many might expect, especially following such a perfect first film. If you’re already looking forward to this one but didn’t have the opportunity to catch it in theaters then it should at the very least be worth your time and the price of a rental. The film is also available to stream for subscribers on Paramount+, at least at the time of this writing.
