Synopsis:
Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake. Starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe.
‘Nosferatu’ tells the haunting and sensual tale of obsession between a young woman with a gift and the creature of the night that’s infatuated with her and intends to make her his at any cost. As the woman’s husband is sent out to make a deal that could seal his successful future, he arrives to sell a local, ancient mansion to a mysterious count that immediately sets him on edge. Unbeknownst to him, the real reason for the count’s move is to claim the woman he wants above all else, a woman who just happens to be his wife.
Written for the screen and directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Northman) who does a magnificent job at the helm of ‘Nosferatu’ guiding along the adaptation with calm unease and an abundance of haunting imagery. The film’s cast includes Bill Skarsgård (John Wick: Chapter 4), Nicholas Hoult (The Menu), Lily-Rose Depp (TV’s The Idol), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Emma Corrin (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), with nearly all contributing noteworthy or at the very least capable performances in each of their respective roles.
‘Nosferatu’ is a hauntingly beautiful and gorgeously shot modern masterpiece that’s rich with eerie atmosphere and visually stunning in nearly every imaginable way. Eggers is to be applauded once again for his impressive attention to detail which is showcased in every street corner, alley and home as each brings the 1800’s to life splendidly, and the clothing and style choices of the characters within are just as precise and notable as the various scenery and surroundings. Even the appearance of the dreaded Count Orlok is marvelous, with Bill Skarsgård delving so fully into the role that he’s not only nearly unrecognizable in appearance but also in voice and cadence, while the look and style of his appearance is wonderfully unsettling in its own right and tremendously helps contribute to the creepy vibe and style that he exudes in everything from dialogue to the most casual of movements. The film also does an outstanding job of building the unease and uncertainty of the other characters throughout as we see each slowly fall into either madness or determination and the end result is an unforgettable modern gem of a horror film that’s not to be missed.
The home entertainment releases of ‘Nosferatu’ also include a new Extended Cut of the feature film itself (the Theatrical Version is also included) which reintegrates a few minutes of additional footage into the film including a longer monologue from Orlok regarding the strange behavior of the villagers, along with an eerie shot of his hand’s shadow moving over a sleeping couple which is indelible in the way it looks but also in the implication that not only does his grasp reach far and wide, but he’s also always watching. There are a few other minor elements within and while many of them offer nice additions to the story and complements to other scenes, none of them drastically change the story or feel of the film itself, instead offering some enjoyable padding and a look at more of what was created but in no way making it something drastic in the bigger scope.
Overall, ‘Nosferatu’ is phenomenal, a modern gothic masterpiece that’s as unnerving and eerie as it is beautiful and meticulously crafted in every manner. It’s another visually mesmerizing offering from talented filmmaker Robert Eggers that’s rich with a haunting atmosphere and a thoroughly dedicated attention to detail that brings a long ago period of the world to dazzling life and even the more minimal aspects of the surroundings are a treat to behold. ‘Nosferatu’ is very highly recommended. It’s a mesmerizing and breathtaking take on a horror legend that’s done with care in a way that we rarely see in today’s world and it’s easily one of the best films of last year, especially when it comes to horror. If you’re already even slightly intrigued by this one then I can’t encourage you strongly enough to make a point of checking it out as soon as possible and be prepared to experience something incredibly special.

The video presentation looks fantastic as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected troubles. Detail is great on characters, clothing and the visually spectacular surroundings and scenery, while black levels and shadowing are rich, deep and clean. Overall, this is a wonderful high definition presentation that looks tremendous at every turn and should easily thrill fans and first time viewers alike.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on both versions of the film. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack makes a perfect complement to the tale and delivers a clean, crisp and frequently immersive audio presentation throughout. It utilizes all seven available channels quite regularly in order to send music, creepy and action related effects, crowd chatter and plenty more repeatedly whipping throughout the various speakers and never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously becoming distorted or rendered problematic. Overall, this is a terrific Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that sounds spectacular and repeatedly enhances the eerie tone and atmosphere of the tale.

This one awesome looking & sounding period horror drama filled with so much dread and eye opening film expertise everything from the direction, cinematography, costumes, scenery, sound & especially the time and place 1838. I found it so creepy in all facets, the acting was so sublime, it’s been decades since I’ve seen such a “fairytale” unfold, the movie like an art piece itself, so much dedication to detail, a must see masterpiece and yes one of the very best movies of the year!
