Synopsis:

Working together for the 12th time, John Wayne and director John Ford forged The Searchers into a landmark Western offering an indelible image of the frontier and the men and women who challenged it. Wayne plays an ex-Confederate soldier seeking his niece, captured by Comanches who massacred his family. He won’t surrender to hunger, thirst, the elements or loneliness. And in his five-year search, he encounters something unexpected: his own humanity. Beautifully photographed by Winston C. Hoch, thrillingly scored by Max Steiner, and memorably acted by a superb ensemble including Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Natalie Wood and Ward Bond, The Searchers endures as “a great film of enormous scope and breathtaking physical beauty” (Danny Peary, Guide for the Film Fanatic). Named the “greatest American Western” by the American Film Institute in 2008, The Searchers was among the first 25 films deemed “culturally or aesthetically significant” by the U.S. Library of Congress in 1989, when it was inducted into its National Film Registry. Now meticulously restored from its original negative, this new presentation of The Searchers presents this masterpiece with unparalleled image quality, accompanied by an impressive array of special features.

John Ford and John Wayne reteam for ‘The Searchers’ which tells the unforgettable tale of an ex-Confederate soldier who not long after returning home after years away must head out on the most difficult journey of his life; to track down and rescue his niece after her capture by Comanches during a brutal attack on the family home front that saw the rest of their family slaughtered. Setting out with the one man he didn’t expect to spend time with, the duo embark on a multi-year quest through every threat known to man, intent to somehow locate and hopefully save the girl or at the very least die trying.

‘The Searchers’ was directed by the legendary John Ford (Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath) from a screenplay written by Frank S. Nugent and based on the novel by Alan LeMay, and Ford does a spectacular job behind the camera guiding along the powerful and memorable screen journey. The film stars acting legend and regular Ford collaborator John Wayne, along with Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond and Natalie Wood who each offer generally capable and solid performances in their respective roles.

‘The Searchers’ was initially released in 1956 and in the many decades since its debut remains one of the most beloved American westerns ever made. The film still offers an engaging, beautifully shot and memorable journey after all of these years. The beautiful shooting locations are consistently on full, gorgeous display throughout and even with a compelling story and a collection of talented stars to back it up it remains one of the most rewarding aspects of the film; now looking more beautiful and pristine than ever thanks to the truly spectacular restoration we are presented with here.

Not only has ‘The Searchers’ gone down in history as one of the best of its genre, it also influenced countless filmmakers and stars known today, even Wayne himself reportedly considered this his favorite role. Filled with heart, humor and a bit of tension at times, ‘The Searchers’ is still worthwhile in the modern era and if you tend to enjoy classic films or even just westerns in particular but have never had the pleasure of this gem, then I can’t encourage you strongly enough to make a point of giving it a chance. It’s a wonderful, expertly crafted film that’s stood the test of time in many ways and is still very much worth checking out, especially with this spectacular new release.
