Synopsis:
IT ENDS WITH US, based on the global phenomenon by Colleen Hoover, tells the empowering story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively). Grappling with a painful past, Lily embarks on a new life in Boston, embraces her artistry, and passionately pursues her dream of opening her own flower shop. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her dangerous father. With the support of her friends and allies, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar) and Alyssa Kincaid (Jenny Slate), Lily must find her own strength to break the pattern or the pattern will break her.
‘It Ends With Us’ accompanies a young woman named Lily Bloom as she moves to Boston to start a new life and finally follow through with her dream of opening her own flower shop. As she begins to form her new life in a new city she happens across a neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid who she instantly feels an attraction to and after a night of discussion she comes across him at her new shop and the two begin to explore a relationship together. Even while falling head over heels in love with him, she can’t help but find coincidences in him to her abusive father. As things start to become concerning, Lily seeks help with her childhood friend and lover Atlas as she tries to determine her best choice in the somewhat questionable relationship; unwilling to follow in her mother’s path and end up stuck in an abusive life.
Directed by Justin Baldoni (Clouds, Five Feet Apart) from a screenplay written by Christy Hall (Daddio) and based on the New York Times Best Seller Book by Colleen Hoover, Baldoni does a nice job at the helm of ‘It Ends With Us’ guiding along the powerful tale with heart, care and hope. The film’s cast includes Blake Lively (A Simple Favor), Justin Baldoni (TV’s Jane the Virgin), Jenny Slate (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Hasan Minhaj (No Hard Feelings), and Brandon Sklenar (TV’s 1923) with the majority each offering capable and generally solid performances in their respective roles for the most part.
‘It Ends With Us’ takes viewers on an emotional, powerful and heartfelt journey with a young woman who is trying to find her path in life and make the business of her dreams a reality at last, while simultaneously trying to avoid repeating the abusive relationship pattern that plagued her mother and that she witnessed multiple times throughout her childhood. Something that’s easier said than done when she falls madly in love with a neurosurgeon who as their relationship progresses begins to show off another, far less comforting side of himself and causes her to question everything while at the same time struggling to determine whether a few events were honest accidents or a hint at something far more dangerous and terrifying lurking under the surface of the man she thought she knew.
‘It Ends With Us’ is a romantic film that’s filled with beauty, wonder, a touch of humor and a great deal of heart that should have no trouble repeatedly tugging on your heart strings both for good and bad, and for the most part it crafts a nice story of courage, hope and love. Likely the film’s biggest weakness is its somewhat goofy dialogue and the way the chain of events throughout time occasionally get so overwhelmed and jumbled that things start to roll together at times.
Altogether, the capable guidance and performance by director/actor Justin Baldoni along with a notable performance by Blake Lively in the lead of ‘It Ends With Us’ as well as a solid supporting cast at its disposal and the overall message of hope and courage all help it to excel beyond the more questionable elements more often than not. Everything comes together quite nicely for the most part into a film that’s recommended for any fans of similar romantic tales or of the beloved novel by Colleen Hoover that it’s based upon, most of which should find a fair amount to love or at least appreciate about it, even if it might not be a truly perfect film as a whole.
