Synopsis:

Gomez (Raul Julia) and Morticia (Anjelica Huston) welcome a new addition to the Addams household—Pubert, their soft, cuddly, and mustachioed baby boy. As Fester (Christopher Lloyd) falls hard for the new nanny (Joan Cusack), cynically suspicious Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) discover she’s a black-widow murderess. Though they’re shipped off to summer camp, Wednesday still has a Thing or two planned to save Fester and the family.

‘Addams Family Values’ reunites viewers with their favorite kooky, spooky family in the live action sequel which sees the family get a bit bigger as Gomez and Morticia welcome their newest child Pubert, much to the disdain of Wednesday and Pugsley who don’t waste a single opportunity to try and remove the new baby from their lives. Realizing they need some additional help to balance the three kids and the dastardly intentions of their older children toward the newborn, the family hires a nanny to balance the load. But when the nanny turns out to be a serial killer after Fester and she promptly sends the clever older kids to summer camp to get them out of the picture, Wednesday and Pugsley will have to find a way to escape and head back home in order to help save their Uncle, assuming of course that they can survive all of the giddy fun that camp has to offer.

‘Addams Family Values’ is once again directed by Barry Sonnenfeld who also helmed the first installment in 1991, this time from a screenplay written by Paul Rudnick and Sonnenfeld does a tremendous job back at the helm guiding along the marvelous sequel with style, heart and humor. The film’s cast features numerous returning stars and a few newcomers including Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Joan Cusack, Christina Ricci, and Carol Kane, along with more who each do splendid jobs in their respective roles.

‘Addams Family Values’ was first released into theaters in November of 1993 and it delivered a delightfully fun, darkly humorous and memorable sequel that still offers up just as much twisted enjoyment today than it first did over three decades ago. I’ve always been a fan of both of these live action Addams Family films (and The Addams Family in general) and ‘Addams Family Values’ is one of those rare exceptions to the rule and it provides a superior sequel to an already very solid first film and one that never seems to get dull or lackluster no matter how many times I revisit it.

The returning cast who play the various members of the Addams clan are all back in top form, yet newcomer to the series Joan Cusack tends to repeatedly steal the show with her unforgettable performance as the serial husband killer thanks to her equally goofy and vicious portrayal. If you’re a fan of the Addams Family characters in general and especially the 1991 film but have somehow never had the pleasure of this surprisingly marvelous sequel then I would strongly urge making a point of checking it out sooner than later because this is a true gem of a follow-up that shouldn’t be missed.

addams family values, 4k, review

‘Addams Family Values’ makes its awaited 4K Ultra HD debut courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment and the sequel arrives home on the UHD format sporting a truly spectacular new Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 which was newly remastered from the original camera negative and I can easily say that this is the best that the sequel has ever looked at home, and by a fair margin at that. The outstanding new video presentation is nicely boosted by a fully capable DTS-HD MA multichannel soundtrack and also features a couple of brand new extras including a new Audio Commentary and Featurette for the beloved sequel. Any fully 4K capable fans of ‘Addams Family Values’ should be absolutely thrilled with this wonderful new release and for anyone that’s already considering a purchase the release is highly recommended and well worth adding to your collection whenever possible.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Addams Family Values’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, newly remastered from the original camera negative and presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks absolutely gorgeous and delivers a clean, sharp and rewardingly filmic presentation from start to finish that’s rich with grain and never suffers from any faults or troubles to be uncovered along the way. Detail is spectacular throughout and noticeable on everything from the character specifics to the intricacies of the dilapidated mansion and the bright environment of the summer camp, along with everything else along the way. It’s all further complemented by the Dolby Vision HDR which provides some richer, more lifelike colors that noticeably pop on various tidbits throughout, while the black levels are delightfully deep and clean. Overall, this is a magnificent Ultra High Definition presentation that impresses every step of the way and should absolutely thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack seems to be identical to that which was included on the 2019 Blu-ray disc but that doesn’t mean there’s any real reason to be disappointed as it still delivers a clean, crisp and occasionally fairly aggressive audio presentation throughout that offers clean, crisp and fully audible dialogue and effects, along with sharp sounding music. It may not be as electric as some modern blockbusters but it never falters or loses its way. Overall, this 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack holds up in every way required of it and should have fans largely satisfied.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Addams Family Values’ features a pair of brand new extras including an ‘Audio Commentary with Director Barry Sonnenfeld and Screenwriter Paul Rudnick’, along with the Featurette ‘Crafting Family Values’ (running approximately 10 minutes in length) which utilizes archival footage including cast and crew interviews that were shot during production.
