Synopsis:

Twisters brings back the blockbuster disaster epic with a whirlwind of heart-stopping action and exhilarating thrills. Ever since a devastating tornado encounter, Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) gave up chasing storms across the Oklahoma prairie to safely study them on screens in New York City. Lured back to the field by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) and a once-in-a-lifetime scientific opportunity, Kate crosses paths with Tyler (Glen Powell), a charming daredevil and self-proclaimed tornado wrangler whose thirst for tornado-tracking adventures made him a social media sensation. As storm season intensifies with terrifying phenomena unlike anything seen before, Kate and Tyler realize they may need to work together if they are to have any chance of taming, and surviving, an unprecedented outbreak of destructive tornados.

‘Twisters’ joins Kate, a woman from Oklahoma who spent her life chasing tornadoes in the hopes of doing some good until a tragic encounter with one that she was miraculously able to survive while others weren’t. Terrified to return to the game, she eventually moved on and began tracking tornadoes for a company in New York in the hope of still helping but not having to revisit the terrifying situation that still affects her. But when Javi her longtime friend and fellow chaser in the old life begs her to return home in order to help with something he believes could potentially save countless victims Kate hesitantly accepts. Returning to her old hunting ground, Kate tries to fall back into her old ways and embrace her talents for tracking patterns, while trying to disregard the terror lurking from her past encounter. Along the way she crosses paths with a popular YouTube star named Tyler known as the tornado wrangler whose dangerous ways introduce her to a new way of investigating the tornadoes.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari, TV’s The Mandalorian) from a screenplay written by Mark L. Smith (The Boys in the Boat) and a story by Joseph Kosinski, Chung does a great job at the helm of ‘Twisters’ guiding along the thrilling fun with care, style and wonder. The film’s cast includes Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Maura Tierney (The Iron Claw), Sasha Lane (Hellboy 2019) and more with the majority each offering generally solid and fitting performances in their respective roles.

‘Twisters’ is a visually spectacular ride that’s as enjoyable and thrilling as it is visually stunning in the way it’s brought to life. While not necessarily a direct sequel by any means, ‘Twisters’ revisits the excitement and spectacle of the 1996 film ‘Twister’ and introduces us to a collection of new characters including a new leading lady in Kate who must return to a world that she loved but now haunts her, yet quickly finds herself getting excited about it once again and appreciating the opportunity to help those in need during trying times.

The film’s general storyline is somewhat generic, yet at the same time is populated by characters with real emotions and simplistic, yet solid backgrounds that aren’t at all difficult to care about as their story progresses, with some painful moments that help to develop each in their own right and allow them to grow, while at the same time utilizing the advances in technology today that allow the film to bring the tornadoes to life in a more realistic and terrifying manner than before and allowing the high-end video and audio offerings to throw us directly into the middle of the beautiful chaos.

‘Twisters’ does pay homage to the previous film at times and while characters and storylines from the other film aren’t touched upon, there are various elements and tidbits that showcase and honor the connection such as the use of Dorothy to track progress, and even the clothing choices for Kate which are impossible not to see as reflections of Helen Hunt’s character in the other film at times. Perhaps most refreshing is that ‘Twisters’ never tries to build anything too extravagant with the tale and instead wisely opts for focusing on precisely what viewers want to see and that’s the terrifying insanity of these weather assaults, along with a handful of amusing characters that you don’t ever mind accompanying for the ride. If you tend to enjoy a solid and well-constructed disaster film or if you’re a fan of ‘Twister’, then ‘Twisters’ shouldn’t disappoint or bore you whatsoever and is definitely recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Twisters’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected issues or faults along the way. It offers outstanding detail that’s noticeable on everything from characters and vehicles to the tornadoes themselves and the resulting destruction and chaos, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers a nice upgrade on coloring that stands out on vehicle appearances and clothing, along with the sky itself and plenty more, while black levels are rewardingly deep, clean and problem free throughout. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that looks consistently marvelous and should easily excite fans and first time viewers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is outstanding and serves up a clean, sharp and wildly hard hitting and immersive audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a whirlwind of activity throughout the various speakers that puts you smack dab in the middle of the insanity, including music, swirling wind and weather effects, plus some vehicle activity and crowd chatter along with more, all while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become negatively affected or rendered inaudible at any point. Overall, this is a phenomenal Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that repeatedly astounds and it should have even the pickiest of audiophiles in awe.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Twisters’ features some entertaining extras that explore bringing the film to life. Included on the release is an ‘Audio Commentary with Director Lee Isaac Chung’, in addition to some ‘Deleted Scenes’ (running approximately 2 minutes in length), a ‘Gag Reel’ (running approximately 4 minutes), and various Behind the Scenes Featurettes that feature interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more. The included Featurettes are ‘Tracking the Fronts: The Path of Twisters’ (approximately 15 minutes), ‘Into the Eye of the Storm’ (24 minutes), ‘Glen Powell: All Access’ (3 minutes), ‘Front Seat to a Chase’ (5 minutes), ‘Voice of a Villain’ (6 minutes) and ‘Tricked-Out Trucks’ (4 minutes).
