[4K Ultra HD Review] A Nightmare On Elm Street; Now Available From Warner Bros 2

‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ follows teenager Nancy and her friends who become terrorized in their dreams by a scarred man with knives for fingers who torments them every time they fall asleep. Once one of Nancy’s friends is killed during the night in a bloody and violent manner it soon becomes apparent that this diabolical figure named Fred Krueger is out for blood and somehow when he kills you in your dream, you die in real life. Desperate to uncover a way of stopping his reign of terror before all of them are picked off, Nancy will have to uncover the truth behind a secret past in the community that links to this mysterious dream killer.

The film was written and directed by Wes Craven (Scream, The Hills Have Eyes) who does a fantastic job at the helm of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ guiding along his own screenplay with tension, terror and style. The film’s cast includes John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Nick Corri, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund who each deliver largely solid performances in their respective roles, although Englund often tends to steal the show with his menacing and unforgettable first portrayal of Freddy.

‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ first slashed its way into theaters in 1984 and helped to cement filmmaker Wes Craven’s place as a notable face of horror, with the film performing well domestically and only getting bigger with its home video debut prior to spawning numerous hit sequels. In a world jam-packed with slasher films and franchises, ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ has always stood out as one of the greats, not only thanks to a fresh and unique killer in Freddy Krueger but also the manner in which he kills his victims in their dreams. It still holds up as a true horror gem today, a whopping four decades after it first hit theater screens. I’ve always been a big fan of the series and the original film is something truly special, even within its own franchise due to Craven’s perfect guidance and a stellar cast including Robert Englund who is outstanding as the film’s terrifying dream-lurking villain.

It builds a perfect tone and vibe that retains a sense of dread and uncertainty looming throughout its duration and only building in tension and terror along its course, helping to make it a staple of the genre since its debut. If you’re a fan of slasher films but have never had the pleasure of Wes Craven’s 1984 masterpiece, then I can’t encourage you strongly enough to make a point of checking it out at your earliest convenience because ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ is truly one of the greats; now making its 4K debut at last with the infamous uncut version (featuring 8 seconds of blood/gore removed in order to obtain an R rating) also making its long awaited stateside debut on disc.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10 for both the Uncut and Theatrical versions, presented in the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks tremendous for the most part and delivers a clean, sharply detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any notable issues or glitches to be found along the way. Detail is better than ever and noticeable on everything including character faces and specifics, especially the intricacies of Krueger and his burns and tattered clothing, along with the various locations indoor and exterior, and nearly everything else appearing onscreen which looks better than ever before. It’s all nicely boosted by the HDR-10 addition which adds some extra detail and more lifelike colors to various elements within, and perfectly complemented all the more by deep, clean black levels and shadowing which play a crucial part in the tale. Overall, this is a great Ultra High Definition presentation that delivers nicely at every turn and should excite fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on both versions of the film. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is quite a treat and offers more of an upgrade than many films of the era that see an Atmos update; it provides a clean, crisp and frequently hard hitting audio presentation throughout that takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send the film’s iconic score, along with creepy effects and a whole lot more zipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while still ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously with one another remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that immerses the viewer into the terror like never before and should thrill fans. The release additionally includes Original Theatrical Audio which is presented in 2.0 DTS-HD MA for those who want to experience it closer to the way it was initially presented upon release.
