With him is his amazing array of characterizations as he talks about his trip to Africa in search of his roots, his early days playing one-night gigs in Mafia-owned clubs and strip joints, and numerous other outrageous topics. Finally, he talks about Pryor on Fire—a recounting of the accident which nearly took his life—an episode he relates with wit and a touch of poignancy. You’ll laugh like you’ve never laughed before!

‘Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip’ showcases iconic comedian Richard Pryor in the early 1980’s as he performs a live comedy show at the Hollywood Palladium to an ecstatic audience. Filmed live and recreated as a comedy film event, Pryor once again proves why he remains one of the most beloved comedians in recent memory as he discusses everything from a trip to Africa that opened his mind in new ways, to his dating life and even accidentally setting himself on fire during his heavy drug-use days and there’s one thing that all of it has in common; pure hilarity as only Pryor can do this masterfully.

The ‘Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip’ film is directed by Joe Layton who does a solid job of guiding along the real-life comedy performance and attuning it to film. Richard Pryor on the other hand serves as writer, producer and of course the film’s key star. While there may not be any additional stars of the show aside from audience reactions, Pryor handles that by throwing plenty of other characters and styles at the audience making for a comedy event that’s guaranteed to have you rolling with laughter.

Initially released in 1982, ‘Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip’ showcases the comedian at his finest and still remains a hilarious good time today, more than four decades after its original release and while some of the content may offend some audiences, no one even moderately familiar with Pryor should find that the slightest bit surprising as he uses his quick-witted and vulgar sense of humor to invite everyone to jump inside his head and world in the most humorous manner possible. Pryor dives into countless goofy, dark and amusing scenarios as he recounts various high and low points in his life and breaks down everything from a vacation to Africa in search of his roots and the time he pulled a cap gun in a Mafia club and won over the respect and admiration of the owner in the process, to a frightening accident that almost took his life when a drug-fueled part of his life backfired horrendously.

There’s no subject too twisted, dark or taboo for Richard Pryor and it’s one of the reasons he is so fondly remembered, not to mention still greatly missed today and he’s at his finest here in ‘Live on the Sunset Strip’ as he guides us through eighty minutes of laugh out loud fun that should have very little trouble eliciting consistent laughs from the viewer whether you’re already a massive fan of his act or somewhat unfamiliar with it.

For anyone that may not be overly familiar with Richard Pryor’s act but enjoys a vulgar, pull no punches standup performance that has something real to say yet will also keep you laughing all the way through, I can’t urge you strongly enough to give ‘Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip’ a watch along with whatever other film and recorded comedy performances of his you might be able to get your hands on. Make no mistake, Richard Pryor is one of the true comedy greats and his bits are just as hilarious and poignant today in many respects as they were when he performed them decades ago.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision, scanned from the original camera negative and presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. Who would have thought we’d see a standup comedy film from the early 1980’s making its way to 4K Ultra HD and with Dolby Vision HDR on top of it? Certainly not me, but at the same time what a pleasant surprise this one turns out to be by contributing a sharp, clean and filmic presentation that looks far better than you might imagine something like this having any right to. The UHD presentation not only provides impressive detail and clarity, but even a noticeable grain structure that gives off a real filmic vibe and appearance. The Dolby Vision HDR may not have too much to complement here but my oh my does Pryor’s red suit absolutely pop like never before thanks to it, while the shadowing is rich and clean throughout. Overall, this is a spectacular Ultra High Definition presentation that brings the hilarious standup film home looking better than most of us ever imagined being possible.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 2.0 split mono DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless soundtrack is up to the task and does a commendable job in every department required of it, perfectly balancing the few audio elements within; primarily the dialogue of the performance paired with the crowd cheering and elation, all of which balances splendidly and everything sounds consistently clean, sharp and fully audible at every turn. Film soundtracks often don’t get more basic than this, but it does an admirable job in its limited task and fans should have no complaints with the result.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip’ solely includes the film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (running approximately 30 seconds in length).
