Synopsis:

This forest isn’t charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its tree line. Mina’s is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn’t reach the bunker in time. Afraid and trapped among strangers, Mina is desperate for answers. Who are the Watchers, and why are they keeping the humans imprisoned, keen to watch their every move.

‘The Watchers’ accompanies a struggling young woman named Mina who is still burdened by the death of her mother years ago. Enlisted by her boss to transport a bird to a new location, she sets out for the long journey ahead only for her vehicle to die randomly on a lonely road surrounded by woods as far as the eye can see. After heading out into the woods to investigate and experiencing strange occurrences, she is encouraged into a random concrete bunker in the middle of the forest where three others currently reside. After reluctantly joining them she discovers that a group of mysterious creatures dubbed The Watchers lurk outside and each night arrive at the window of the bunker to watch the strangers before departing prior to first light and as long as they let them watch and never go out at night will remain safe. What are these watchers, what is this place and is there a way to get out safely? One way or another, Mina is certain to find out as the days go on and the uncertainty and questions continue to build.

(L-r) OLWEN FOUÉRÉ as Madeline, OLIVER FINNEGAN as Daniel, DAKOTA FANNING as Mina and GEORGINA CAMPBELL as Ciara in New Line Cinema’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ fantasy thriller “THE WATCHERS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Written for the screen and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan (TV’s Servant) and based on the novel by A.M. Shine, Shyamalan does a decent job at the helm of ‘The Watchers’ which marks her feature length directorial debut, guiding along the eeriness and tension quite capably. The film’s cast includes Dakota Fanning (The Equalizer 3), Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), Olwen Fouéré (Tarot), and Oliver Finnegan (TV’s Outlander) who each offer decent and fitting performances for the most part in their respective roles.

‘The Watchers’ offers a strange and mysterious story with plenty of questions lingering under the surface and then takes viewers on a twisty journey that’s filled with intrigue, uncertainty and an unknown villain of sorts that slowly unravels the elements within as it progresses. Instead of throwing all of the facts and information at us from the onset, it instead allows the viewer to uncover the mysteries along with our heroine, and while some of them work quite well and add to the tale, it almost feels like it goes too far into exploring the reality and purpose of these “watchers” which as a whole somewhat detracts from the eerie uncertainty that in many ways is one of the film’s biggest strengths.

GEORGINA CAMPBELL as Ciara and DAKOTA FANNING as Mina in New Line Cinema’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ fantasy thriller “THE WATCHERS,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

The film is beautifully made and there’s no shortage of visually spectacular scenery and moments as well as palpable tension to be appreciated along the way, with the seemingly never-ending forest itself offering a sense of eeriness that lingers splendidly over the characters and keeps us on edge until everything is eventually laid out. There are a handful of surprises, twists and turns to be unveiled along the way which should come as little surprise with Ishana Night Shyamalan at the helm and clearly influenced quite heavily by her father M. Night Shyamalan’s filmmaking approach, both for good and bad.

I actually enjoyed ‘The Watchers’ far more than many critics and found myself appreciating that it doesn’t go too far with some of the material and subject matter in most respects, but it does get lost in itself a handful of times throughout its duration. It almost felt as though it would have been stronger had it disregarded many elements and reveals from the last act which caused it to go a bit too far off the rails, but it’s also impossible not to appreciate the many positive elements at the same time and it’s a quite engaging and enjoyable film as a whole that’s worth checking out, especially if you enjoy M. Night Shyamalan’s filmmaking efforts which are undeniably similar in numerous ways.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Watchers’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks very good for the most part and provides a sharp, clean and immaculately detailed presentation throughout that holds up capably and never suffers from any unexpected issues, although does look exceptionally dark at times to the point where it can be more difficult to differentiate some elements in the pitch black forest. Detail is sharp and solid throughout, noticeable on characters, the expansive woods and the creatures along with more, while the Dolby Vision HDR complements much of it well by offering some more notable and lifelike colors visible on the bird, trees and other tidbits which are all balanced by capable and rich black levels. Overall, this is a largely great Ultra High definition presentation that should mostly excite fans and newcomers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack nicely complements the onscreen tension and excitement and delivers a clean, crisp and quite aggressive audio presentation throughout. It consistently utilizes all seven available channels in order to send music, rustling, creatures and other nature and action effects whipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while never negatively affecting any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously. Overall, this is a solid Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that sounds very nice at every turn and shouldn’t disappoint.
