Synopsis:

Baffling murders, fascinating plot twists, and remarkable camerawork all contribute to this spellbinding, time-honored film noir written, directed by, and starring Orson Welles. Hired to work on a yacht belonging to the disabled husband of femme fatale Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth), Michael O’Hara (Welles) is an innocent man drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue and murder.

‘The Lady from Shanghai’ tells the thrilling story of a generally good man named Michael O’Hara who upon being hired to work on a yacht belonging to the disabled husband of femme fatale Elsa Bannister promptly finds himself thrown into a wild mix of murder, danger, hired killings and secrets, leaving him unable to trust any of those around him but unable to resist the attraction he feels toward Elsa. But will his employ and feelings only cause him more trouble and potential danger, or will it help him to uncover the truth behind all of the twisty secrets that each seems intent to hold onto?

The 1940’s classic was directed by the legendary Orson Welles with a screenplay and production also by Welles; with a story based on the novel by Sherwood King, and Welles does a marvelous job with ‘The Lady from Shanghai’ guiding along the tense mystery with care and style throughout. The film’s cast includes Orson Welles also starring in one of the lead roles, alongside Rita Hayworth, Everett Sloane, and Glenn Anders who each contribute solid performances that benefit the film significantly in their own right.

‘The Lady from Shanghai’ made its debut in the states in 1948 and took viewers on a tense and twisty ride filled with murder, mystery and intrigue, while reportedly shocking audiences by showcasing star Rita Hayworth with her iconic short, red hair dyed blonde and some believed it was largely to blame for the financial disappoint of the film. Fortunately in the many decades since its initial release, the film has attained the acclaim that it deserves and has become a beloved classic with a dedicated fan base behind it, while the funhouse centered climax has gone down in history with many claiming it as one of the greatest scenes of its time, if not ever.

I must admit I had never had the pleasure of ‘The Lady from Shanghai’ prior to reviewing this release and I was thrilled with just how powerful and well-constructed it is, perfectly showcasing the range of Welles who was responsible for multiple tasks throughout its production including director, producer, star and even screenwriter. If you’ve never had the opportunity to give this one a chance or if it simply flew under your radar but you’re a fan of fantastic film noir mysteries of old, then I can’t urge you strongly enough to give this one a watch whenever possible. It’s a twisty, tense and unforgettable mystery that still delivers the goods today and is a film that shouldn’t be overlooked by any fan of classic cinema.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings the beloved Orson Welles classic ‘The Lady from Shanghai’ home on glorious 4K Ultra HD. The release features the iconic film in full Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision, restored from the original camera negative and further complemented by a lossless DTS-HD MA mono soundtrack and it looks and sounds absolutely wonderful, better than most fans of the film likely ever dreamed that it would. In addition to the spectacular new UHD presentation and fully capable soundtrack, the release also includes a few nice extras on top of it all and altogether it should make this one an absolute treat for any fully 4K capable fans. If you enjoy the film and are already considering a purchase, then this new 4K edition of ‘The Lady from Shanghai’ definitely doesn’t disappoint and is highly recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Lady from Shanghai’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision, restored from the original camera negative and presented in its original 1.37:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks tremendous, especially when taking into account the age of the film and its source material which still appears to be in marvelous shape. The release offers a clean, sharp and filmic presentation that shows outstanding detail and clarity on character faces and clothing, along with the various settings both interior and outdoors, as well as the boat and more, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers a nice contribution of deeper, clean black levels which are nicely balanced by the lighter elements which helps to allow this black and white film to pop like never before. Overall, this is a spectacular Ultra High Definition video presentation that impresses at every turn and should have fans thrilled with the result.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 2.0 split mono DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless soundtrack may not be as substantial of an upgrade as the new video presentation but it’s far from a disappointment and provides a clean, crisp and capably balanced soundtrack throughout that never falters or becomes overwhelmed. All of the dialogue, music and other effects share the channel without any issues or conflictions and any audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously with another keeps each bit of dialogue and sound clean and fully audible throughout. Overall, this is a very solid 2.0 DTS-HD MA mono soundtrack that should have viewers very satisfied.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Lady from Shanghai’ features a few notable extras that fans of the classic should enjoy. Included on the release is an ‘Audio Commentary with Peter Bogdanovich’, in addition to ‘A Conversation with Peter Bogdanovich’ (running approximately 21 minutes in length). The film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (approximately 2 minutes) is also included.
