Synopsis:
A thrilling post-MTV roller-coaster ride, RUN LOLA RUN is the internationally acclaimed sensation about two star-crossed lovers who have only minutes to change the course of their lives. Time is running out for Lola (Franka Potente). She’s just received a frantic phone call from her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), who’s lost a small fortune belonging to his mobster boss. If Lola doesn’t replace the money in twenty minutes, Manni will surely suffer severe consequences. Written and directed by Tom Tykwer.
The cult classic international sensation ‘Run Lola Run’ tells the fast-paced story a woman named Lola and her boyfriend Manni who are forced to race against time in order to try and save themselves from the ramifications of a mistake that could mean deadly trouble. When Manni is given a chance to prove himself only to lose a bag full of cash that belongs to a mobster boss, he and Lola are left with the seemingly impossible task of somehow finding a way to replace the funds within a period of twenty minutes before the drop is scheduled. After having her moped stolen while buying smokes, Lola must head out on foot and run throughout the chaotic city streets trying to secure the money by any means possible, and before Manni does something even more foolish and tries to get ahold of it himself.
The film is written and directed by Tom Tykwer who does a fantastic job guiding along ‘Run Lola Run’ from his own script, perfectly replicating the tension with a flashy and hyper-paced formula throughout. The film’s cast includes Franka Potente, Moritz Bleibtreu, Herbert Knaup, Nina Petri, Joachim Krol, Armin Rohde, Heino Ferch, Suzanne Von Borsody, and Sebastian Schipper who each do a decent job at the very least in their respective roles and help to keep the fun and excitement coming at lightning speed.
‘Run Lola Run’ is a thrilling, brightly colored and hyper-paced good time that’s drastically different from the majority of typical full length films in many respects. A film largely focusing on a woman running around town multiple times really doesn’t have any right to be as good as ‘Run Lola Run’ is and it’s hard not to appreciate the unique approach and style, utilizing jumpy and frequently moving cameras to keep the viewer feeling on edge and relating to the hectic rush the characters onscreen are dealing with, while serving up a fair bit of action, fun and even a surprising amount of heart at times in addition. Tom Tykwer delivers a wildly entertaining adventure that will leave you nearly as breathless as the title character by its conclusion and will have you on the edge of your seat consistently along the way. If you’ve never had the pleasure of ‘Run Lola Run’ but enjoy an unusual and cleverly constructed film that keeps you guessing, then I would definitely encourage running to check this one out whenever possible because it’s a film that shouldn’t be missed by any fan of cinema.
‘Run Lola Run’ arrives home in a standalone 4K Ultra HD release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary. The release brings the fan-favorite home sporting a spectacular Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 that jolts some impressive and vibrantly colorful new life into the tale and should have fans blown away. The outstanding UHD video presentation is splendidly boosted by an immersive multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtrack featuring the original German audio, as well as options to view the film dubbed in English and Spanish. In addition to the marvelous video and audio presentations in tow, the release also features a handful of solid extras including a couple of Audio Commentary tracks, Featurettes and more.
It should be noted that ‘Run Lola Run’ was previously released on 4K Ultra HD as part of the Sony Pictures Classics 30th Anniversary exclusive box set in 2022; while I don’t have access to that release everything I’ve looked into would imply that this release is identical to the one included in the set, therefore if you already own that box set you may want to hold off on this standalone edition. For any other fans of this fast-paced and wickedly fun ride, this 4K release is a definite treat and highly recommended.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD release of ‘Run Lola Run’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The video presentation looks marvelous through and through and offers a sharp, richly detailed and gorgeously colored presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any faults or issues to be located throughout. Detail is sharp and spectacular across the board, with character faces, clothing and surroundings all looking pristine at every turn and retaining its share of grain and other welcome artifacts representative of its source material, while the Dolby Vision HDR only seals the deal by providing some simply beautiful, lifelike colors that almost scream at you from the screen and make this vividly colored ride look that much more dazzling; all capably balanced by deep, rich and problem free black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition video presentation that never disappoints and should have fans ecstatic.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack in its original German language as well as English and Spanish Dubbed. I viewed with the German DTS-HD MA track enabled which sounds quite tremendous altogether and delivers a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It frequently utilizes all five available channels in order to send music, scene shifting effects, along with some action, crowd chatter and other various elements zipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while never conflicting with any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that contributes admirably to the fun throughout and should keep fans pleased.
SPECIAL FEATURES:

Also included on the release is a ‘Making of’ Featurette (running approximately 39 minutes in length) along with a ‘Still Running’ Featurette (running approximately 17 minutes), in addition to the ‘Believe Music Video’ (approximately 4 minutes) and the film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (90 seconds).
*Please note: The above images are taken from the film’s Trailer and are not reflective of the actual 4K Ultra HD release or its quality.
